Municipal Inspector

Internal candidates must apply through Jobs Hub in Workday. All positions close Friday morning at 12:01am. The City of Arvada promotes Equal Pay for Equal Work. Pay Range: $33.80–$46.22 hourly. Responsibilities Inspects construction of public capital improvement projects and maintenance programs, covering all city infrastructure. Ensures compliance of construction and materials with approved plans, project specifications, the City of Arvada engineering code, state laws, and local ordinances. Facilitates pre‑construction, construction, and worksite meetings with contractors, developers, City project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders. Clarifies and reviews City procedures, standards, and project specifications; provides technical guidance, resolves problems, and oversees corrective actions. Interprets construction plans and specifications; prepares and recommends change orders; consults with City engineering staff on field design problems. Reviews as‑built drawings and inspects stored materials on and off‑site to verify correct installation against submittals for payment. Inspects and modifies traffic control plans and coordinates road closures with emergency services and other City departments to ensure safety compliance. Inspects potable and non‑potable water systems, sanitary sewer systems, storm water drainage systems, and concrete or asphalt street improvements, ensuring proper grades, elevations, and adherence to ADA requirements. Observes earthwork grading, slope construction, earthen berms, surface drainage, compaction reports, and grading certificates. Coordinates material, soil, and concrete testing with independent laboratories, maintaining reports and records. Prepares detailed reports on construction progress, including inspections, lab reports, change orders, daily work logs, payment requests, and maintains project documents. Maintains daily records of operations, time reports, and vehicle reports. Performs final inspection of construction projects for acceptance, prepares required correction lists, and approves certificates of occupancy. Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries regarding construction activities, providing information and updates. Frequently operates a personal or City‑owned motor vehicle to travel to and from work locations throughout the City. Investigates complaints during natural disasters related to failures of public works and utilities systems, and may be required to work extended hours or be on-call. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Advanced knowledge of safety and construction laws, regulations, and standards, including local ordinances governing engineering construction projects. Proficiency in engineering construction and inspection methods, proper usage of construction materials and equipment, and safe work practices. Expertise in traffic control standards, engineering mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry), and customer service techniques. In-depth familiarity with the City of Arvada engineering code and enforcement procedures for all public rights‑of‑way work. Strong knowledge of civil engineering specifications, soils and materials testing equipment, and the ability to assist the Soils Technician as necessary. Ability to read and interpret civil engineering construction plans and drawings. Capacity to coordinate multiple contractors and prioritize multiple tasks and inspections for city projects and developments. Professional representation in training, meetings, and events, and ability to operate a motor vehicle. Preferred License & Certification ATTSA traffic control technician certification, CAPA A certification, and CAPA I certification within one (1) year of appointment. Trench safety competent person certification and stormwater regulatory training within two (2) years of appointment. Valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Education & Work Experience High School/GED required. Three (3) or more years of construction experience, with two (2) years of inspecting or supervising concrete work, pipe installation, or asphalt work. College education in a related field may substitute for experience. Preferred: Experience in public works construction and an associate’s degree in construction management or a related field. Physical Demands Light to moderate physical effort, frequent standing or walking, maintaining arms and hands in repetitive positions, working with light objects and tools. Exposure to heat and noise, typically outside in the elements. Occasional hazards such as hazardous waste, ladders, cleaning supplies, trips, and falls.
