Job Title: Procurement Coordinator

Job Description

The Procurement Coordinator is responsible for the end-to-end procurement of materials and supplies needed to support production, with a strong focus on controlling inventory flow, ensuring continuity of supply, and enabling the accurate execution of production schedules. This role combines hands-on purchasing activities with planning, supplier management, and ERP-based inventory analysis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Interact regularly with internal and external customers to gather purchasing needs and translate them into accurate and timely procurement actions.
• Manage suppliers to meet just-in-time requirements and ensure optimal product turnaround times, particularly for specialty manufacturers.
• Review purchase requests, enter purchase data into the ERP system, verify appropriate budget categories, create purchase orders, and track shipments through delivery.
• Purchase a full range of structural steels and metals, including brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, sheet steel, and plate steel, as well as centrifugal castings and a wide variety of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic parts.
• Collaborate closely with the receiving department to verify incoming materials, address discrepancies, and coordinate the return of nonconforming materials.
• Attend meetings, conferences, and supplier events to stay current with industry trends and to build and maintain strong supplier relationships.
• Assist the Expeditor with managing vendor relationships to ensure quality service and timely deliverables, and terminate vendor relationships when service or product quality is unsatisfactory.
• Coordinate production material activities, including the creation and release of purchase orders, and run Safety Stock reports monthly to reorder materials as necessary.
• Work with the Planner and Scheduler to plan, develop, and monitor the production schedule so that finished goods quantities, types, and timelines align with customer demand.
• Develop and analyze ERP reports to monitor inventory levels and ensure sufficient material availability to meet production requirements while avoiding potential material shortages.
• Prepare purchasing-related reports and summaries for management as required, providing clear visibility into procurement activities, inventory status, and supplier performance.
• Troubleshoot planning, scheduling, and purchase order discrepancies by working with internal teams and external suppliers to minimize interruptions to production.
• Provide recommendations during the product design phase by identifying required supply materials, forecasting material suitability, estimating costs, and determining quantities for new products.
• Work with management to drive cost savings through process improvements, strategic sourcing, and effective negotiation with suppliers.

Essential Skills

• Associates Degree in business, procurement, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of buyer/planner experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience in purchasing and procurement, including creating and managing purchase orders and overseeing inventory activities.
• Hands-on experience using ERP systems for purchasing and inventory management, preferably with Infor VISUAL.
• Experience working with suppliers of a broad range of materials, including manufacturing materials and office supplies.
• Strong organizational skills, including record keeping, time management, and effective follow-up.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
• High attention to detail and a strong sense of urgency, with the ability to prioritize work while maintaining quality and accuracy.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to build positive relationships at various levels within the organization and with external contacts.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and handle interruptions while still meeting deadlines.
• Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
• Demonstrated negotiation skills for securing favorable terms and managing supplier performance.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and proficiency in using ERP systems in a purchasing or inventory context.
• Professional demeanor and the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience purchasing structural steels and metals, including brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, sheet and plate steel, and centrifugal castings.
• Experience procuring mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic components for manufacturing operations.
• Background in buyer and inventory activities within an ERP environment, with Infor VISUAL experience considered a strong plus.
• Exposure to both manufacturing and office purchasing, offering a broad perspective on organizational procurement needs.
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability for maintaining appropriate inventory levels and supporting uninterrupted production.
• Interest in staying current with industry trends and supplier markets through meetings, conferences, and networking.
• Motivation to contribute to cost savings initiatives through process improvements and strategic negotiation.
• Ability to support product design activities by providing insights into material availability, suitability, and cost implications.

Work Environment

This role is primarily based in an office environment, where you will work with ERP systems, spreadsheets, and purchasing documentation to manage materials and supplier relationships. You will also spend time in the manufacturing area to check inventory levels, verify materials, and collaborate with production and receiving teams. The environment is fast-paced and deadline-driven, requiring frequent coordination with planning, scheduling, and expediting functions. The position offers exposure to purchasing across both manufacturing and office categories, providing a comprehensive view of organizational procurement activities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Spartanburg, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
