Variable, 8 hours per day, Monday–Friday, with possible weekend shifts. Overview The University of California San Diego is seeking an Associate Athletic Trainer to serve as a critical leader in the holistic, year‑round care of UC San Diego scholar‑athletes within the 24‑sport Intercollegiate Athletic Program. The role will work closely with the Sports Medicine team, Athletic Performance Unit, and coaching staff to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate athletic injuries. Responsibilities Apply advanced concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex athletic training services and ensure evidence‑based practice in selecting methods and techniques for clinical and professional problem solving. Assume administrative leadership of sports‑medicine programs and oversee the reconditioning and rehabilitation of scholar‑athletes on referral from physicians. Lead the sports‑medicine and athletic‑performance staff to implement best practices in return‑to‑sport programs customized to individual scholar‑athlete needs. Coordinate with performance, coaching, and medical teams to establish baseline measurements, injury‑prevention protocols, and injury‑assessment and treatment plans. Serve as a direct supervisor and approved preceptor for athletic‑training students from collegiate programs. Make injury referrals to appropriate medical personnel and manage/organize follow‑up care. Develop and implement policies, protocols, and equipment usage guidelines for injury prevention and treatment. Qualifications Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in high‑performance sport settings (Division I, professional, international or national level) working under direct supervision of a NATABOC‑certified Athletic Trainer. Bachelor’s degree in a related area with at least five (5) years in athletic training under direct supervision of a NATA‑certified Athletic Trainer, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Computer skills in relevant programs, including Smartabase and Catapult. Advanced knowledge of athletic injury prevention, therapeutic modalities, first‑aid, equipment, and injury assessment and treatment. Proficiency in physical agents and modalities for athletic injury treatment and rehabilitation. Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding sensitive athletic‑injury matters. Advanced knowledge of electronic medical record systems and local medical facilities for emergencies and referrals. Current knowledge of NCAA and other athletic‑conference rules and standards applicable to Sports Medicine. Strong collaborative and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work assignments and communicate effectively. Advanced knowledge of procurement functions and campus budget requirements for athletic equipment and supplies. Must hold current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, or equivalent, and maintain good‑standing NATABOC certification. Experience supervising staff and interns, including providing direction, training, and evaluation. Experience developing mental‑health screening and emergency plans for student athletes. Demonstrated professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior, and attentiveness to others. Special Conditions Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory background‑check clearance. Position is a mandated reporter of child abuse or neglect under California law. Position serves as campus security authority per the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy.
