Medical Support Assistant

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) is responsible for functions such as serving as an initial point of contact for the units, clinics, patient, to include, but not limited to, scheduling patient appointments, tracking, reviewing, and responding to electronic orders, consults, and other elements in the electronic medical record and medical systems. The AMSA position requires knowledge of computerized data entry, information processing systems, the healthcare systems organization, basic rules and regulations governing visitors and patient treatment, knowledge of standard procedures, utilizing medical records, and medical terminology. Major duties include (but not limited to): The incumbent serves as a primary source of information related to patient care activities and patient flow within inpatient wards. Responsibilities include coordinating patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, scheduling follow up appointments, tracking consults, verifying physician and treatment orders, ensuring accuracy of documentation, arranging patient transportation, and entering patient information into VISTA, CPRS, Bed Management, and the electronic Gains and Losses sheet. Additional duties include collecting and updating demographic information, patient processing, and providing customer service. The role requires responding to face to face and phone requests of varying urgency, addressing equipment issues, and supporting rapid response situations. The incumbent also supports staffing, training, compliance, reporting, quality assurance, and budgetary needs. Administrative responsibilities include maintaining office supplies, managing and storing forms, ensuring proper functioning of office equipment, filing patient paperwork promptly, requesting records, and performing other assigned tasks. The AMSA provides essential administrative and technical support to ensure timely, accurate, and patient-centered workflow across inpatient and outpatient services. They will manage complex scheduling responsibilities, maintains clinic access, and assists with resolving conflicts related to provider availability, coverage changes, or inpatient bed capacity. They respond to phone and in-person inquiries, courteously and promptly, provide information following privacy requirements, and communicate procedures to veterans and families with compassion and clarity.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Student Repayment Program: This occupational series may be eligible for the Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), and participation is available for highly qualified candidates. Repayment is limited to $40,000 annually, up to $100,000 in lifetime awards. Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
