To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.Responsibilities:School Maintenance Worker Level 01:School Maintenance Worker performs basic maintenance and repairs to ensure that all students, staff, and the community are provided a safe, attractive, and clean, and healthy environment for learning and work. Perform regular inspections of equipment and systems, reporting any abnormalities and hazards immediately to the Principal and/or Facility Manager Maintenance Specialist. Reviews work order assignments. Discusses specific work requests with the Supervisor, as needed, making sure orders have been written and approved before performing tasks, except in emergency situations. Completes work assigned. Maintains the physical facilities of the school by performing a wide variety of general upkeep and repair tasks, including but not limited to: replacing light bulbs, minor ceiling and floor tile replacement, servicing lock and hardware devices, repairing and replacing window screens, minor wall repairs including patching and painting, boarding up broken or damaged windows/doors, etc. Moves and delivers furniture, basic preventative maintenance, and care and maintenance of hand and power tools required for the job. Assures equipment is properly cared for and maintained as necessary for continued efficiency.School Maintenance Worker Level 02:School Maintenance Worker Performs a variety of carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and other maintenance duties. Includes cutting, repairing, resurfacing, cleaning, measuring with a variety of tools and equipment. Makes repairs to walls, roads, sidewalks, sprinklers, concrete. Operates mowers, tractors, push mowers, weed eaters and blowers. Trims trees using hand and power saws. Empties trash containers on campus. As needed, will operate a scooter to transport tools and equipment to work sites. Cleans all tools and equipment used in the daily line of work. Will use cleaning solvents and materials to prevent deterioration of tools or equipment due to rust corrosion, or other adverse conditions. Oversees and/or personally cleans work areas and restores areas to good order. Assignments require more than a rudimentary but less than journeyman skill and knowledge of the trades involved. The School Maintenance Worker will be responsible for all duties as assigned by his/her supervisor and may be required at times to supervise Level 1 employees as requested by the supervisor.**SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:**Refer to BIE Job Category Standards for additional qualification requirements and substitutions for education. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL NOT BE SOLICITED BY THIS OFFICE.**BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:**School Maintenance Worker Level 01:Education: High School diploma or GED is required.Experience: NoneSchool Maintenance Worker Level 02:Education: High School or GED diploma is required.Experience: Minimum of one (1) year's experience in general maintenance or related work; And, demonstrating skill in at least three skill/craft areas.All applicants must demonstrate the ability to follow written and oral instructions.**CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:**A valid State Driver's license is a prerequisite, as the position requires operation of a motor vehicle in performance of work. The work requires transporting students or conducting other assigned official business throughout the geographic area of the Education Line Office, or school compound. A valid State Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.An annual physical examination is required. Incumbent may be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:**Incumbents of these positions must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. In most instances, and amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify and applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, incumbents must have mental and emotional stability.Occasionally, incumbents may be required to travel for training purpose or attendance at meetings from the duty station.**BASIS OF RATING:**Once the announcement has closed, all applicants for this position will be rated based upon the extent and quality of their experience, training and/or education as reflected on their resume.
