Butterfly Staffing is seeking an experienced Site Safety and Health Officer to support a federal healthcare construction project in Salem, Virginia for this Direct Hire opportunity.

This role will be responsible for day-to-day site safety on a complex, phased renovation within an active medical environment. The project involves multiple trades and requires careful coordination around ongoing facility operations, occupied spaces, shutdowns and construction sequencing.

The SSHO will work closely with project management, field supervision, quality control, subcontractors and government representatives to ensure compliance with federal safety requirements throughout construction.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary on-site safety representative for the project
• Implement and enforce the project Accident Prevention Plan and site-specific safety requirements
• Conduct daily safety inspections, site walks and hazard assessments
• Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks and required training
• Review Activity Hazard Analyses and verify appropriate controls are in place before work begins
• Monitor subcontractor compliance with OSHA, EM 385-1-1 and project safety requirements
• Maintain required safety documentation, logs, reports and training records
• Investigate incidents, near misses and safety concerns and coordinate corrective actions
• Coordinate closely with the Superintendent, Quality Control Manager and Project Manager
• Support safe sequencing of phased construction activities within an occupied healthcare environment

Qualifications

• Experience serving as an SSHO or senior safety professional on federal construction projects
• Experience with VA, USACE, NAVFAC, DoD or other federal construction strongly preferred
• Experience with occupied facility, healthcare or phased renovation projects preferred
• Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and EM 385-1-1
• Experience reviewing AHAs, maintaining safety documentation and managing subcontractor safety compliance
• Ability to communicate effectively with field teams, subcontractors and government representatives
• Strong documentation, organization and problem-solving skills

Certifications

• OSHA 30 required
• Current First Aid/CPR certification required
• EM 385-1-1 training/experience required
• Additional competent person certifications such as Fall Protection, Excavation, Scaffolding or similar are a plus
