Power Electronics Engineering Intern

Position Details Hourly rate: $37.50 per hour. This figure is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. Location: Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. What you’ll do Eaton’s Research Labs (ERL) has an exciting Engineering Intern position in the Power Conversion group to support research and technology development in emerging technology programs. The job function includes developing and testing innovative power conversion technologies and supporting senior engineers in software, hardware development and testing. The individual will also support ongoing modeling, simulation, and HIL development. A key role will be to support presenting ideas and projects to Eaton business leaders and leadership. Ability to develop models and simulate in common power electronics simulation packages is necessary. Communicate complicated technologies in a clear and concise way to a variety of different audiences. A good blend of technical knowledge and is required to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will be reporting to the Technology Manager. As a technical intern, support emerging power conversion & power system solutions based on breakthrough technologies for industrial and aerospace applications. Participate in technology projects by supporting teams (local and remote resources) and working with external technology resources (Business Divisions, Universities and Customers). Support advancement of state of the art power electronics, power systems, and power converter technologies, as well as supporting the identification of commercialization opportunities with diverse Eaton businesses. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, support specific task within the scope of work and provide updates to project manager. Support project plans, and deliver results on budget and schedule. Support projects with partners from national labs, universities and other research institutes. Qualifications Basic Qualifications PhD or Master's student in Electrical Engineering specializing in Power Electronics. One year of experience in a PhD or master's program. Must be able to work in the United States on a permanent and ongoing basis without requiring company sponsorship. Technical Knowledge Power Electronics & Motor Drives Fundamentals in low and medium voltage power conversion and power systems engineering, including creating specifications, defining application space, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results. Familiar with motor drive technology, including drive and converter topologies, power electronics, electric machines, machine control strategies, energy storage systems, grid connected converters, and alternative power generation/distribution systems. Understanding of the trade-offs required to balance performance, reliability, serviceability, and cost in power electronic system design. Modeling & Simulation Experienced in modeling power converters and power systems using industry-standard simulation tools: MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Simplorer, PSIM, and PSCAD. Familiar with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) development and validation using platforms such as Opal RT. Packaging, Parasitics & Insulation Knowledge of electromechanical packaging techniques for power electronics. Understanding of the effects of parasitic inductance and capacitance on converter performance, and familiarity with methods to minimize, control, or mitigate parasitics. Familiar with creepage and clearance requirements, insulation methods, and interconnection technologies used in high-power and high-voltage systems. Awareness of various thermal management and cooling techniques for power electronic components. Real-Time Simulation & Control Familiar with real-time simulation platforms including dSPACE, OPAL RT, and RTDS for rapid prototyping, control development, and system-level validation. Wide-Bandgap (WBG) Technology Familiar with SiC and GaN based power conversion, including associated challenges and performance benefits. Experience or exposure to double pulse testing, gate driver design, and auxiliary power supply design for WBG devices. Skills Good English communication and presentation skills (oral and written).
