Jira & Confluence Administrator / Systems Engineer

ArcheSys is seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on Jira & Confluence Administrator / Systems Engineer to own, optimize, and scale our enterprise Atlassian ecosystem. In this role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day administration, system health, workflow engineering, and integration architecture of Jira Software, Jira Service Management (JSM), and Confluence (Data Center and Cloud). You will bridge the gap between platform operations and software development teams by creating advanced automations, managing marketplace apps, establishing governance guardrails, and integrating Atlassian tools with modern DevOps pipelines and identity providers.

Location: This is a remote position.

Residency Requirement: Candidates  MUST have lived in the U.S. for at least 3 of the past 5  years and be authorized to work in the U.S. (Citizen, Permanent Resident, or EAD).

Key Responsibilities

• Atlassian Administration & Configuration: Configure and maintain Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Confluence; build and optimize custom issue types, advanced workflows, permission schemes, screen schemes, field configurations, and project templates.
• Systems Engineering & Platform Health: Monitor system performance, storage utilization, indexing, and uptime across Atlassian Data Center and Cloud instances; execute routine maintenance, patch management, version upgrades, and backup/restore validations.
• Workflow Automation & Scripting: Design, test, and implement robust automations using Jira Automation rules, ScriptRunner (Groovy), or Python via Atlassian REST APIs to eliminate manual overhead and enforce compliance checks.
• Integrations & DevOps Toolchain: Integrate Jira and Confluence with external enterprise systems, including identity providers (Okta, Azure AD, SAML/SSO), CI/CD platforms (CloudBees/Jenkins, GitLab, GitHub), collaboration tools (Slack, Microsoft Teams), and monitoring systems.
• Marketplace App & Plugin Lifecycle: Evaluate, test, license, and govern third-party Atlassian Marketplace apps (e.g., ScriptRunner, Advanced Roadmaps/Jira Plans, Tempo, Structure, Xray Test Management); manage vendor upgrades and deprecations.
• Data Migration & Governance: Support data cleanup initiatives, instance consolidations, project archiving, and Cloud-to-Cloud or Data Center-to-Cloud migration planning and execution.
• End-User Enablement & Support: Provide tier 2/3 technical support for Atlassian tool users, resolve permission or workflow bottlenecks, write clear technical documentation/SOPs in Confluence, and conduct admin-led enablement sessions for development and project management teams.

Required Technical Skills & Qualifications

• Experience: 4–7 years of dedicated experience administering, engineering, and supporting Jira and Confluence in mid-to-large enterprise environments.
• Atlassian Deep Dive: In-depth technical mastery of Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Confluence administration (both Data Center and Atlassian Cloud architectures).
• Automation & Scripting: Strong hands-on experience authoring Groovy scripts in ScriptRunner, building complex Jira native automations, and interacting with Atlassian REST APIs using Python or Bash.
• Systems & Infrastructure Fundamentals: Working familiarity with underlying operating systems (Linux/RHEL), relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle for Atlassian backend queries/troubleshooting), and basic networking/reverse proxies (NGINX, Apache).
• Identity & Access Management: Experience configuring SAML 2.0, SSO, LDAP/Active Directory, and Atlassian Access / Cloud Guard.
• DevOps Ecosystem Awareness: Solid understanding of how Jira connects into modern Agile/DevOps workflows (linking issues to Git commits, pull requests, build statuses, and deployments).

Preferred Certifications & Qualifications

• Atlassian Certified Professional (ACP-100 / ACP-120: Jira Administrator for Data Center or Cloud)
• CompTIA Security+ or AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner / Solutions Architect – Associate (beneficial for secure cloud-hosted environments)
• Atlassian Certified in Managing Jira Service Projects (ACP-400 / ACP-420)
• Atlassian Certified Professional (ACP-200 / ACP-220: Confluence Administrator)

Security & Compliance:

• Implement and manage security controls, ensuring system integrity and compliance with industry standards and organizational policies.
• Work closely with the security team to monitor for vulnerabilities and implement necessary patches and updates.
• Support compliance initiatives by adhering to established IT policies and guidelines.

Collaboration & Documentation:

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop cohesive and innovative solutions.
• Create and maintain comprehensive documentation outlining system architecture, procedures, and best practices.
• Document procedures, configurations, and specifications, ensuring that knowledge is effectively shared across the team.
• Contribute to the maintenance of a knowledge base to facilitate continuous learning and team development.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand their needs and develop solutions accordingly.
• Participate in knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance team skills and expertise.
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of technical documentation, including system designs, configurations, and procedures.
