Job Title: Metal Saw Machine Operator

Job Description

This1st shift opportunity sets up and operates metal-sawing equipment to cut flat steel stock to precise customer specifications. You will read shop routings and blueprints, use a standard tape measure to 1/32 of an inch, and work with computer-controlled saw machinery that closely aligns with laser machine operation. The position combines hands-on machine operation, basic computer use, and quality inspection in a busy manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate metal-sawing machines, including hacksaws and cutoff saws, to cut metal stock to specified dimensions.

• Review orders, shop routings, and blueprints to determine material type, stock size, and required dimensions and shapes, including round and square pieces.

• Use a computer interface to select the correct product and blueprint, define cutting paths, and specify any holes or additional cuts required in the steel.

• Obtain and transfer stock to the machine manually or using a hoist, ensuring safe and efficient material handling.

• Install or adjust saw blades, set blade tension, and select cutting speeds appropriate for the material and operation.

• Set saw blade angles to achieve required angle cuts using appropriate hand tools.

• Set stops and guides to control the dimensions of each cut, using a steel rule and wrenches for accurate setup.

• Position and secure stock against stops or in feeding devices to ensure safe and precise cutting.

• Start and regulate coolant flow to the cutting area to maintain blade performance and cut quality.

• Start, monitor, and adjust machine operation, watching for irregularities and making corrections as needed.

• Measure finished workpieces using a tape measure and rules to verify conformance to specifications and tolerances.

• Mark identifying data on workpieces to ensure correct tracking and routing through the production process.

• Replace defective cutting blades or wheels using hand tools, and perform basic machine adjustments as required.

• Inspect and measure parts regularly to maintain quality control and document any issues or deviations.

• Communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors to receive instructions, coordinate activities, and support production goals.

• Follow all safety rules, use appropriate safety practices, and maintain a clean and orderly work area.

• Record daily attendance and production information accurately in the timekeeping system.

• Adhere to all company policies and procedures consistently and reliably.

• Perform physical labor, including standing for long periods, moving equipment, and handling materials in a manufacturing environment.

• Carry out other related duties as assigned to support production and operational needs.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting shop routings and blueprints.

• Ability to use a standard tape measure accurately to 1/32 of an inch.

• Hands-on experience operating metal-sawing machines or similar production machinery.

• Basic computer skills to operate machine interfaces and select appropriate cutting programs.

• Ability to perform physical labor, including standing, lifting, and moving materials in a manufacturing setting.

• Comfort working in an environment where you may get dirty due to contact with metal, coolants, and shop conditions.

• Ability to safely operate or learn to operate a forklift for material handling.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining quality standards through regular inspection and measurement.

• Ability to follow safety rules, company policies, and written and verbal instructions consistently.

• Effective communication skills to coordinate with co-workers and supervisors.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with saw operation in a manufacturing or metal fabrication environment.

• Exposure to CNC machining or computer-controlled machine operation.

• Previous forklift experience or certification is beneficial.

• General mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools such as wrenches and rules.

• Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional 10-hour days and Saturdays when needed.

Work Environment

Work takes place on a manufacturing shop floor in a well-lit, character-filled building with several windows. Temperatures may vary with the seasons and are not always fully controlled, so conditions can range from hot in the summer to cold in the winter; fans and open doors help provide airflow in warmer months, and cold drinks and frozen treats are offered in summer. The environment includes exposure to noise, fumes, dust, and mists, and the role requires being on your feet for most of the shift while moving equipment and working around machine parts. Standard hours are Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with flexibility to work 10-hour days and up to a maximum of 8 hours on Saturdays when needed; some days may start at 6:00 a.m. instead. The setting is a traditional industrial production floor where safety practices, proper footwear, and appropriate work attire are important for comfort and protection.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
