This position is assigned to the Pathology & Laboratory Service at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland -Atlanta VA Health Care System, located in Decatur, Georgia. The incumbent serves as a Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS). He/she may act as a liaison to the supervisor and other departments/divisions of the medical center for the appropriate laboratory specialty. The Lead CLS is responsible for all aspects of operation in their area of specialty, including assignment of work responsibilities, workload management, and completion of assignments for staff at or above the full performance level as well as preparation and maintenance of records and reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation, and compliance.

• Evaluates quality control protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.
• Performs validation/method verification studies for new systems.
• Ensures that laboratory tests and procedures are consistent with accrediting agencies standards and requirements.
• Consults with healthcare providers on logical protocol to follow in attempting to confirm the diagnosis of risk assessment of a patient.
• Performs qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and/or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, urine, and other body fluids using established procedures.
• Maintains records of test and examinations and final results for all record functions and inquiries related to patient care.
• Troubleshoots instruments and resolves technical problems whenever possible, document corrective action, and reports problems to all supervisors.
• Assists in instructing students and laboratory personnel in the principles and techniques of diagnostic test and examinations.
• Provides advisory services to technicians, technologist, and other specialist relative to higher knowledge acquired thru continuing education and work experience.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:30 am until 4:00 pm; Rotating Weekends & Holidays

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
