Position Details Position Information Job Description Position Title: Desktop Engineer - Information Technology Job Description: The Desktop Engineer is a forward-thinking IT professional responsible for ensuring optimal desktop and endpoint operations across our diverse environment. This role not only covers traditional desktop support but also integrates modern endpoint management practices including cloud and mobile device management (MDM), cybersecurity fundamentals, and server-level administration. The successful candidate will be proficient in managing environments that leverage tools such as Microsoft Intune, Autopilot, JAMF for Apple device management, and traditional systems like Active Directory, Entra, and Azure. They will work collaboratively with IT peers, security teams, and client services to ensure that computer images, software deployments, and system customizations meet the highest standards of reliability, scalability, and security, in line with NIST guidelines and industry best practices. Desktop and Endpoint Management Create, maintain, and deploy modern computer images for Windows and Mac OS environments. Manage and update endpoint devices using both traditional systems (e.g., Jira, JAMF) and modern cloud-based tools (e.g., Microsoft Intune). Manage Windows Autopilot Oversee mobile device management (MDM) practices to ensure secure and efficient management of enterprise mobile devices. Cloud and Server Administration Manage cloud applications and enforce cloud app security protocols. Execute lower-level system administrator duties, including server patching, customizations, and routine maintenance. Administer and maintain Active Directory, Entra, and Azure environments to support organizational infrastructure. Help support the Hyper-V server environment and infrastructure. Cybersecurity and Compliance Integrate cybersecurity practices into daily operations, ensuring compliance with NIST standards and industry best practices. Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to implement machine hardening, secure patching, and proactive vulnerability management. Automation, Scripting, and System Updates Develop and execute scripts (using PowerShell and other scripting languages) to automate routine tasks and OS setting adjustments. Maintain a comprehensive update schedule for operating systems and applications, ensuring timely patching and customization. Technical Support and Documentation Respond to user tickets regarding software deployment, device management, and system updates, providing excellent end-user support. Analyze the impact of proposed technology changes and document policies, procedures, and technical guides. Train and mentor junior IT staff, serving as a role model and technical resource within the team. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Process Improvement Work closely with IT support, security, networking, and other project teams to develop and implement scalable technology solutions. Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance the overall efficiency, security, and reliability of IT operations. Foster strong working relationships with stakeholders, ensuring that IT solutions align with both business and educational objectives. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, plus three (3) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience. At least three (3) years of customer service experience. Proven ability to work effectively in project teams and manage multiple initiatives concurrently. Preferred Qualifications Certifications related to workstation management, cybersecurity, networking, and customer service (e.g., A+, Security+, Network+, Azure Fundamentals, Microsoft Certifications, Apple Certifications, etc.). Experience with endpoint management appliances such as Intune and JAMF. Prior experience in an educational environment or similar setting. Familiarity with cloud management platforms, mobile device management (MDM), and enterprise server management. Background in operating systems administration (Windows, Mac OS) and software deployment (Adobe, MS Office, utilities, etc.). Exposure to cybersecurity best practices and compliance standards (e.g., NIST). Proficiency in managing and troubleshooting various operating systems and platforms. Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess and implement system improvements. Excellent communication and technical writing abilities. Capacity to balance multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment. Ability to mentor and support junior IT personnel. Experience with scripting and automation tools (e.g., PowerShell). Physical Demands Work is performed in an office environment with occasional lifting and hauling of equipment up to sixty (60) lbs. Standard work hours are 8AM -- 5PM with opportunities for hybrid/remote work. A valid Driver's License and the ability to travel to remote campus locations and attend training sessions are required.
