Posting Number 4198P Position Title Training and Safety Captain - 1055 (INTERNAL POSTING) Department Fire Job Code 03116 FLSA Status Non-Exempt Union Code/Affiliation Local 1055 Division TRAINING Job Description Summary The purpose of this job is to plan, assign, supervise, review, and participate in training for fire department personnel, related to fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue and hazardous materials response, community education and wellness, and equipment/facility service and maintenance. Performs various related technical tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description * Serves as the shift Field Training Officer. Meets regularly with recruits. Supervises, evaluates, and coordinates the work of assigned personnel. Conducts employee performance evaluations and identifies training needs. Assigns training and provides counseling as needed. Constantly provides recruits with opportunities for success through coaching, mentoring, and discipline of probationary Firefighters. * Trains recruited individuals, departmental employees, and external agencies. * Serves as safety officer and assists department members at events, as needed. * Monitors and maintains training-related inventory and supplies. * Creates and maintains records and reports. * Responds to situations involving the destruction of property and potential loss of life, such as fires, accidents, hazardous materials, and emergency medical and rescue incidents. Operates a variety of fire suppression and emergency medical equipment. * Serves as Incident Safety Officer by responding to calls for service wearing full turnout gear, including SCBA, when working fire incidents. Monitors radio activity and responds to other calls. * Oversees the cleaning and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment, fire station, and training grounds. * Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. * Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities * Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees (2 or more full-time employees), including providing input on hiring, issuing formal discipline, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. Such authority is not merely of a routine or clerical nature but requires the use of independent judgment. Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered MUST BE A CURRENT CITY EMPLOYEE HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROBATIONARY PERIOD. Education and Experience * High School Diploma or equivalent required. * Completion of a qualifying period as a Company Officer is required. Licenses or Certifications * Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B). * CPR certification. * Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Officer I Certification. * Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Instructor II Certification within one year of hire * Missouri Division of Fire Safety Firefighter I and II Certification. * Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations Certification. * Live Fire 1403 Certification within one year of hire * Missouri Division of Fire Safety Incident Safety Officer Certification within one year of hire. * Valid driver's license.
