Residential Experience & Living Learning Community Coordinator Job Category: Admin Requisition Number: COORD001798 Full-Time On-site Locations University of Redlands Redlands, CA 92374, USA Description Department/Administration: Office of Student Affairs Position: Administrative, Exempt (12 months), Full-time (40 Hours) Salary Range: $70,304-$70,304 Hiring Range: Near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. Introductory Period: Twelve (12) Months Available: Immediately The Johnston Center for Integrative Studies is one of the oldest academic living‑learning communities in the country and a signature program at the University of Redlands. Students live and learn together in the Johnston dorm, where there are classrooms, creative spaces, a meditation room, a commuter lounge, and a music room. As students in an intentional, consensus‑based community, they use their community budget to bring in speakers, host live music and other events, and support community and academic projects. Central to Johnston is self‑governance, which empowers students to make decisions about how best to live and learn together. Johnston also uses a restorative justice approach to conduct. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Residence Life, Housing and Student Wellbeing, the Residential Experience Coordinator has direct oversight of the Johnston Center’s residential community and provides leadership for the expansion of living‑learning communities across the University. Duties and Responsibilities Community Development and Engagement Create and maintain a vibrant living/learning environment that supports student success, residential experience and education. Facilitate student integration and acclimation to the university and housing experiences. Help students learn to steward their community budget in alignment with university policies. Co‑coordinate weekly community meetings, maintain an archive of notes, and track student expenditures. Provide support for event and program planning, including space and technology needs. Mentor and develop student leaders, cultivating creativity and engagement as changemakers. Organize community retreats and conduct training on community and university events in collaboration with relevant offices. Assist with the supplemental New Student Orientation and recruit student leaders. Foster diversity, inclusion and belonging within the community. Advise students on personal, mental health and academic wellness and refer to resources. Ensure programs align with department, division and institutional priorities while honoring the unique living‑learning practices of Johnston. Collaborate with housing professionals to address community issues. Maintain a visible presence and serve as a standards educator for residential conduct initiatives. Oversee the Student Food Pantry in partnership with relevant faculty. Partner with faculty and stakeholders to implement related programs and initiatives. Represent the department on committees and workgroups and support institutional events. Expand collaboration with other residential communities and campus resources. Oversee embedded care and student development support in partnership with campus partners. Provide support for institutional signature events and program initiatives. Participate in student affairs meetings, professional development, and support key performance indicators. Development, Training and Supervision of Student Leaders Oversee the leadership competencies and development of a diverse team of Community Assistants. Assist in recruitment, selection and training of Community Assistants. Provide coaching, mentorship and competency development for Community Assistants. Co‑facilitate weekly training sessions and support retention and success. Hold weekly one‑on‑one meetings with Community Assistants. Facilitate study halls, academic support initiatives and collateral assignments with Community Assistants. Supervise the Johnston Community Intern work‑study position. Residence Life and Housing Operations Coordinate residential placements of Johnston community students in partnership with Residence Life and Housing. Respond to inquiries via email, phone and voicemail on a daily basis. Investigate and respond to housing concerns with a solution‑oriented approach. Coordinate with Facilities to track work orders and maintenance concerns. Maintain the official website and social media accounts. Reserve campus spaces and equipment for meetings and events. Support data collection, assessment and student data management using software. Perform administrative processes related to StarRez system. Maintain facilities through regular walk‑throughs and inventory. Manage community and roommate agreements. Assist in fire drills and safety inspections in partnership with designated offices. Ensure compliance with FERPA, Clery reporting, Title IX reporting and other federal regulations. Emergency Response and Crisis Intervention Perform on‑call duties, being accessible by phone or in person during emergencies. Carry the on‑call phone on a rotating weekly basis. Collaborate with Community Assistants and Associate Dean to identify and support students in need. Make safety, medical and security decisions and alert the Backup Administrator‑on‑Call when warranted. Provide educational programming and proactive interventions that promote responsible decision‑making and student well‑being. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualification Guidelines Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following: Experience, Training and Education Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education leadership, higher education counseling, or a related field. Two years of experience in a residential community or living‑learning community in higher education. Experience supporting underrepresented, neurodivergent, first‑generation and active student changemaker populations. Understanding of student development theory and its application to student‑centered experiences. Preferred Qualifications Ability and interest in working with a diverse population. Experience delivering holistic student care. Demonstrated skills in leadership, hiring and supervision, group facilitation, advising, training, programming, community development and conduct. Experience in mediation processes and crisis intervention. Strong verbal, non‑verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform under pressure and motivate others in a team setting. Knowledge of student support service units working with residence life and housing. Ability to interpret and evaluate problems and propose solutions. High level of confidentiality and thorough knowledge of campus policies. Understanding of FERPA and other housing regulations. Capacity to interpret and enforce procedures and policies. Ability to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of student development theory, residence life practices and student engagement strategies. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with students, faculty, staff and partners. Ability to advise, mentor and develop student leaders while fostering an inclusive community. Excellent organizational skills and capacity to manage multiple priorities and maintain documents. Effective conflict resolution and facilitation skills. Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies, crises and student well‑being concerns. Knowledge of FERPA, student conduct processes and campus housing operations. Capacity to collaborate across departments and contribute to institutional initiatives. Competence in interacting with a culturally and ethnically diverse population. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions Standard office and field setting. Duties performed primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. Physical Demands Regular sitting, walking short distances, attending meetings, using computer, speaking clearly, seeing fine print, hearing voices, lifting up to 10 pounds.
