Radiologic Technologist

Under the direction of the Manager Medical Imaging and Lead Technologist, performs a variety of technical radiographic procedures; applies prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis. Responsible for designated areas or procedures, as required. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the adult and geriatric patient and adapt their care to the physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs. Responsibilities:

• Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.
• Meets, greets, answers questions, and provides an understandable explanation of Radiologic examinations to patients in order to reduce apprehension.
• Provides for safety and comfort of all patients, in accordance with prescribed standards.
• Schedules patients for radiologic examinations in a prescribed manner, ensuring an efficient patient flow.
• Processes radiographic images using the DR systems or CR Readers and scans the images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for physician review.
• Performs diagnostic procedures demonstrating sound understanding of anatomical positioning, physiology, and technical factors, in order to produce optimum results.
• Scans documents into Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and (PACS), when applicable.
• Operates fixed radiographic equipment in the Radiology Department and/or transports and operates portable radiographic equipment on nursing units.
• Assists physician and physician assistant in the administration of prescribed contrast media.
• Processes exposed radiographic images as required.
• Follows protocols for appropriate usage of the RIS and PACS.
• Maintains orderliness, cleanliness, and adequate supplies for assigned area.
• Rotates within the department and by shift, as required, including weekends and holidays.
• Participates in the training and instruction of radiologic technology for staff radiographers and students.
• Maintains quality assurance, observant of hospital and department safety regulations, environmental, and infection control, in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures and objectives.
• Attire and personal appearance must conform to departmental guidelines and standards.
• Develop and maintain an advanced technical education program in specialty area and provide presentations at department or hospital-wide meetings.
• Take an assignment as preceptor, with responsibility to coordinate and document the training and orientation of new employees in the department.
• Take assignment of duties related to documentation, quality control, education, and patient services with approval of the departments Lead Technologist.
• Upon completion of the selected criteria and promotion to a Technologist II classification, the Technologist II is expected to continue to perform as a technical expert in the specialty by completing, with approval of the departments Lead Technologist, at least one of the criteria (see Basic Knowledge section below) annually and one of the following:
• Documenting the completion of examination verification.
• Establishing methods for the review and monitoring of recalled/repeated radiographs and related forms.
• Documenting the utilization of ionic/non-ionic pharmaceuticals.
• Recording the utilization and inventory control processes for medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, and radioactive supplies and materials, or
• A criterion appropriate to the radiology department as mutually agreed by the Technologist II and the Lead Technologist.
• Performs other related duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Basic Knowledge:

• Completion of formal training in an AMA-approved accredited school of radiologic technology or equivalent.
• Maintains a current license to work in the State of Rhode Island.
• Must hold current ARRT certification.
• Must hold a current CPR certification from AHA, BLS for Healthcare Providers.
• Ability to consistently meet the following job accountabilities: critical thinking, interpersonal skills, team membership, customer focus, initiative, and reliability.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
• Completion of the qualification process for the Technologist II position by obtaining two letters of recommendation within the previous three months from technical, supervisory, or medical staff members in Diagnostic Imaging attesting to the technologist's level of professionalism and technical competence and two criteria from among the following, selected by the technologist:
• Obtain advanced certification in the technologist's current radiographic specialty, if available, through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or complete an academic degree in a related clinical field, such as an associate degree in Radiologic Technology, or a baccalaureate or graduate degree in a related technical field, or in an administrative field related to healthcare or business, provided this criterion may be met only once for each degree or certification awarded.
• Take an active advanced teaching role in one of the Schools of Technology, such as teaching didactic courses, presenting lectures of performing the duties of the clinical coordinator, provided the technologist is qualified under the Essentials and Guidelines of an accredited educational program for the Radiographer adopted by the American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, and American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
• Develop new methods of patient tracking of exams, quality control, testing efficiency, radiation protection or quality assurance.
• Prepare at least one in-service program to be delivered at least three times in one year. The program shall be approved by the American Society of Radiologic Technology for the equivalent of at least one continuing education unit.
• Hold an office in or actively serve on a clinical practice committee of a professional organization relevant to the technologist's radiographic specialty.
• Participate as a regular member of a technical, clinical, or quality assurance committee within Diagnostic Imaging as evidenced by minutes of the meeting.
• Write and publish an article in a recognized professional journal or receive published acknowledgment by the first author of the technologist's contribution.
• Coordinate the development, implementation and approval for a new procedure or protocol that enhances efficiency and/or quality of work in the department.

Experience:

• 3+ years of imaging experience, including at least two years at The Miriam Hospital.
• Successful completion of clinical experience required for certification.
• Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients, visitors, physicians and staff of all levels and display empathy towards all patients.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians' offices, and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.
• Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day. Subject to electrical and energy hazards. May lift and position patients and lift supply up to 50 pounds.

Independent Action:

Incumbent functions independently within a broad scope of department policies and practices; generally, refers specific problems to manager only where clarification of department policies and procedures may be required.

Pay Range:

$34.20-$56.42
