Process Safety Engineer

Position Purpose

Owns process safety as a discipline for a facility handling flammable solvents and a catalytic reactor, likely covered by OSHA process safety management and EPA risk management program rules.

Key Responsibilities

• Determine and document applicability of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA 40 CFR Part 68 based on final chemical inventory and threshold quantities.
• Build and own the process safety information package, including chemical hazard data, technology and equipment information.
• Lead process hazard analyses using HAZOP or equivalent, and drive recommendation closure before startup.
• Own relief system design verification, flare or vent header adequacy, and overpressure protection documentation.
• Establish the management of change, pre startup safety review and mechanical integrity programs.
• Address polymerization hazards, including inhibitor management, temperature control and storage practices.
• Develop and verify safe operating limits and consequences of deviation for inclusion in operating procedures.
• Support incident investigation and lead process safety training for operations and maintenance.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.
• Seven or more years of process safety in chemical or petrochemical manufacturing.
• Direct experience leading HAZOPs and closing recommendations.
• Working command of relief system sizing and API 520 and 521.
• Practical PSM and RMP program implementation experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• CCPSC certification.
• Layer of protection analysis and safety integrity level determination experience.
• Reactive chemistry or self reactive monomer experience.
