Job Description and Duties The Automotive Technician II reports to the Academy Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) Unit sergeant and receives the majority of assignments from the EVOC sergeant. The Automotive Technician II will be required to inspect vehicles for safety and other defects. Use automotive scanners to troubleshoot and diagnose trouble codes. Perform routine maintenance and repairs which may include, but is not limited to, the following: change wheels, hubs, and rotors; replace shocks, bushings, sway bars, and brackets; troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, interior controls, lighting equipment, and emergency equipment; mount and balance tires. Perform preventive maintenance by inspecting cooling systems, including all hoses, and/or adjusting fan and alternator belts, inspecting, and adjusting brakes, and inspecting wheel, suspension, and frame components for cracks and fractures. Replace brake shoes and disc brake pads, service master cylinders and wheel cylinders (replace as necessary). Test drive vehicles prior to and following repairs. Complete extensive repairs including removing and replacing engines, transmissions, rear differentials, drive axles, gas tanks, sub-frame assemblies, and body components (i.e., bumper covers, fenders, doors). Perform major engine overhauls as necessary. Assist the sergeant with administrative functions which may include the coordination of vendor services, repairs, parts, and procurement of equipment and supplies. Assist with data entry into Fleet Focus and required inventories. Assist with logistical duties to include organization of tools, parts, supplies, consumables, and shop equipment. You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement. Working Conditions The Automotive Technician II will work both indoors and outdoors. While indoors, the temperature and humidity are reasonably controlled, and while outdoors, the employee is exposed to climatic conditions. Minimum Requirements You will find the Minimum Requirements in the Class Specification. Special Requirements A valid California Drivers License (CDL) is required; provide CDL number, class, expiration date, endorsements, restrictions. A Drug Screening must be passed prior to being hired. A Background Investigation must be cleared prior to being hired. Medical Clearance must be obtained prior to being hired.
