Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TDHH)

Role Overview

The Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides specialized instruction to students with hearing impairments in either a traditional or adapted curriculum. The role focuses on supporting academic, communication, and developmental needs, particularly for preschool and elementary-aged students, within a school-based program.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver academic instruction aligned with general or modified curriculum

• Support deaf/hard-of-hearing students using appropriate teaching strategies

• Utilize ASL (American Sign Language) and amplification technologies

• Adapt lessons for diverse age groups, especially early childhood learners

• Collaborate with SPED teams and program staff

• Maintain compliance with professional standards and regulations

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree (preferred)

• Washington State Teaching Certificate (required)

• Deaf Education Endorsement (required)

• Knowledge of:

• ASL

• Amplification devices

• Experience with deaf/hard-of-hearing students (preferred)

• ASL proficiency certification (may be required depending on district/state)

Additional Requirements

• CPR certification (if applicable)

• TB screening (PPD or chest X-ray)

• Health certificate (as required)

• Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old

Assignment Details

• Setting: Remote or In-Person (School-based program at YSD)

• Schedule: Weekdays, 37 hours/week

• Contract Length: 36 weeks

• Start Date: September 2, 2026

• Student Population: Preschool & Elementary (multi-age flexibility required)

• Interview Process: Virtual interview with SPED Director team

Compensation

• Remote Rate: $55/hr

• Local In-Person Rate: $75/hr
