Director of Engineering

The Director of Engineering owns the end-to-end software development lifecycle, overseeing application, quality assurance, and integration engineering to deliver a scalable, compliant, and AI-augmented health data platform. This leader is responsible for building and leading a high-performance engineering organization that prioritizes quality, security, and predictability, while advancing technological innovation aligned with organizational goals and industry standards. Key Responsibilities Lead application engineering, QA testing, and integration engineering teams, ensuring delivery timelines, quality benchmarks, and security standards are consistently met. Build, develop, and retain a talented engineering team, including hiring and mentoring engineers and engineering managers, fostering a high-performance culture. Define and oversee system architecture and technical strategy for a scalable, HIPAA-compliant health data platform, managing technical debt and infrastructure refactoring proactively. Establish and execute comprehensive testing, release management, and uptime strategies to ensure reliable, high-quality software deployment in production environments. Integrate security and regulatory compliance processes into the software development lifecycle, following industry best practices and low-friction review workflows. Leverage AI and machine learning tools to enhance engineering productivity, software quality, and development workflows, setting clear standards for AI-assisted work. Collaborate with product teams to ensure technical feasibility, realistic delivery timelines, and phased feature releases that provide early value. Document and implement standardized software development lifecycle processes and best practices, ensuring onboarding clarity for new engineers and AI systems. Core Qualifications & Requirements 10+ years of software engineering experience including 5+ years managing engineering teams and leadership of managers. Proven success scaling engineering organizations and delivery processes in high-growth, complex environments. Extensive experience developing secure, scalable cloud and data platforms, especially within regulated, HIPAA-compliant healthcare, life sciences, or data-sensitive industries. Demonstrated ability to deliver predictably with rigorous release management, reliability metrics, and technical QC. Hands-on experience integrating AI/ML into products or engineering workflows to improve throughput and quality. Strong partnership skills with product roadmaps, ability to translate requirements into actionable, phased development plans. Excellent leadership and communication skills capable of earning trust and guiding senior engineers and technical teams. Nice-to-Have Qualifications Direct experience with clinical trial data, real-world evidence (RWE), electronic health records (EHR/EMR), FHIR standards, and healthcare data integration. Skilled in building pipelines for external healthcare data sources such as EHRs and HIEs. Familiarity with AI-assisted development tooling and evaluation-driven delivery pipelines to optimize software workflows. Experience leading engineering teams through growth phases from startup traction to sustainable, profitable expansion. Core Technical Skills Cloud platforms: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or similar. Data integration and health data formats: FHIR, HL7, HIE. Security standards: HIPAA, GDPR, ISO 27001, etc. CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices, test automation, and infrastructure as code.
