Phlebotomist /Associate - Full Time

Position Summary: Phlebotomist/Associate II collects blood from patients using established standards to ensure specimen quality while maintaining patient safety and comfort. The role includes receiving and tracking specimens in the laboratory information system and handling, centrifuging, delivering, and packaging reference test samples. Responsibilities Follow the AIDET protocol and clearly explain procedures to patients. Practice hand hygiene and use the appropriate personal protective equipment. Verify proper patient identification before any procedure. Perform venipuncture and finger/heelstick with aseptic technique to maintain specimen integrity. Maintain patient safety and comfort; provide proper care of phlebotomy sites. Coordinate specimen collection for special studies. Perform waived testing (e.g., fingerstick PT, glucose, cholesterol). Accurately label specimens, receive and track them in the laboratory information system. Dispose of sharps and medical waste in accordance with hospital policy. Organize, stock, and maintain phlebotomy trays in a sanitary condition. Maintain supplies for phlebotomy and assist technologists with general supply storage. Maintain regulatory documentation (temperature, inventory control, lot numbers). Clarify orders with physicians’ offices. Arrange patient redraws if necessary. Receive specimens from patients, OR, ER, and physician offices; label and track them as required. Verify the accuracy of test orders from the requisition. Prepare specimens for sending out to reference laboratories, including manifests and tracking procedures. Package “pass‑through” specimens to Quest or LabCorp. Document all information on received and sent specimens, including transportation temperature. Distribute specimens to the correct laboratory department. Investigate and follow up on problems in the problem folder, contacting physicians’ offices or patients as needed. Support and assist coworkers. Follow all hospital policies (safety, confidentiality, compliance, dress code, etc.). Answer laboratory telephone calls with proper etiquette and provide information on tests and specimen requirements. Handle customer-service complaints and forward them to the appropriate parties for resolution. Dispatch phlebotomists and laboratory couriers; maintain a courier dispatch log. Provide customer service for the outpatient area, greet patients, and process paperwork. Register patients in the hospital information system, capturing demographic and insurance data for billing purposes. Enter patient test orders and clarify any unclear orders with the patient’s physician in the information system. Perform any other duties as directed by Laboratory Administration or supervisors. Required Experience and Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Current phlebotomy certification or Medical Assistant / Patient Care Technician certification required upon hire. Completion of phlebotomy courses and/or previous phlebotomy experience. Ability to travel offsite if required. Basic office and computer keyboarding skills. Organizational skills, medical terminology, and ICD‑10 coding knowledge. Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills. Preferred Experience and Qualifications One (1) year of phlebotomy experience preferred. Travel and Other Requirements As part of employment at the Southampton Hospital, travel to other locations may be required to meet operational needs. Pre‑employment Requirements Complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the hospital’s Employee Health Services. Complete an electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references. Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen. Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Provide copies of any required New York State licenses or certificates.
