The Anesthesia Technologist is a member of staff who provides technical support services to the clinical staff and to the department. The incumbent is responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of anesthesia machines.

Responsibilities include identifying electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines, setting up and applying specialized anesthesia equipment, assembling systems for invasive monitoring, and performing corrective actions necessary to correct electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines. The role also involves recognizing electronic or mechanical problems in anesthesia machines which require corrective action by the manufacturer, determining the availability and appropriateness of replacement equipment, and completing installation of replacement equipment, as required.

The Anesthesia Technologist inspects, tests, and installs replacement medical, compressed gas cylinders on anesthesia machines, identifies malfunctioning anesthesia equipment for repair by biomedical services, and generates work or maintenance requisitions. They also access the monthly biomedical services preventative maintenance listing, schedule all listed equipment, deliver equipment to biomedical services, collect and install serviced items, and maintain an inventory of specialized non-stock supplies for use in selected anesthesia applications.

Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience. High School diploma is required. Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.

ASATT Certification Preferred. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
