Job Title Plant & Process Design Engineer Job Overview Support X-energy’s Nuclear Auxiliaries team by designing and developing mechanical systems and components. The role encompasses defining system architecture, performing calculations, specifying equipment, and overseeing the integration of systems through the full engineering life cycle. It also involves rigorous Systems Engineering processes, risk management, procurement documentation, and ensuring compliance with X-energy design guides, standards, and quality assurance procedures. Job Responsibilities Lead the execution of core tasks without close supervision, applying independent judgment. Design and develop mechanical systems and components, ensuring alignment with nuclear safety and system engineering requirements. Identify, collect, and document applicable requirements, interface criteria, and design basis by coordinating with stakeholders and systems engineers. Develop system integration in SmartPlant 3D and produce schematics such as P&ID, PFD, and BFD diagrams. Perform hand calculations for thermal, hydraulic, and structural systems to verify feasibility against design criteria. Create and maintain design documentation: design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, design descriptions, and drawings. Prepare procurement documents including specifications, data sheets, and statements of work for purchasing process equipment. Execute Systems Engineering processes, reviewing documentation from other systems for technical correctness and compliance. Support safety culture and integrate quality assurance into all engineering activities per the Quality Assurance Program. Identify, document, report, and manage system and project risks, ensuring visibility and mitigation. Apply design and configuration management procedures to meet project quality requirements. Develop mechanical and physical system concepts, and support the creation of structures, systems, and components. Plan and organize analytical work required to evaluate SSC performance and ensure compliance with technical specifications. Conduct independent reviews and acceptance reviews of engineering deliverables and data. Manage the entire system development life cycle, including planning, monitoring, and controlling across all phases. Align internal and external stakeholder design efforts to define functional and physical architecture, critical design parameters, and detailed drawings. Oversee documentation to meet design requirements, interfaces, and applicable industry codes and standards. Supervise calculations and analytical tool use for structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other scoping calculations. Verify compliance of procured items and services with contract specifications during acceptance. Implement and manage engineering changes following approved procedures. Provide guidance to junior engineers and lead small engineering teams for problem resolution and high‑quality deliverables. Work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and maintain professional communication at all times. Perform other duties as assigned by the manager. Job Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline from an ABET‑accredited university. Typically ten years of mechanical engineering experience, which may include academic research or design projects. Master’s degree in engineering or related field may substitute for two years of experience. Ph.D. in engineering or related field may substitute for three years of experience. Preferred Skills Familiarity with ASME code B31.1 and B31.3. Experience overseeing vendors for components such as blowers, fans, pumps, heat exchangers, and compressors. Location & Work Site Expectations 530 Gaither Road, Rockville, MD. 4 days in the office, up to 10% travel as required. Standard office schedule: 8:00am – 5:00pm ET, Monday through Friday. Compensation Salary range: $130,000 – $160,000. Compensation will be based on relevant experience, education, and qualifications. Salary represents base pay only and does not include benefits or other incentives.
