Public Safety Officer Level ISUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The Public Safety Officer Level I is under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Officer Sergeant/Captain. The Public Safety Officer Level I and II patrols are assigned areas of the campus to include but not limited to offices, buildings and/or parking areas and reports via telephone or radio. The Public Safety Officer takes action to protect persons, property, prevents fires, theft, vandalism, disorder and damage to college property. The Senior Public Safety Officer on duty may be required to serve as the Officer in Charge of the shift in the absence of the Sergeant/Captain. This is a Public Safety Union position as stated in the Public Safety collective bargaining agreement.Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesAttend and complete to standard all assigned departmental trainingBe able to work in a paramilitary structure with a well-defined chain of commandArrive on time and properly attired (employee may be required to wear a uniform) for assigned shiftsBe available for shift and weekend work plus assigned to multiple campuses are a requirement of this positionRecord and report information concerning complaints and refers it to Shift leadersIssues traffic tickets and/or warnings for violations of traffic/parking regulations and policiesPatrols corridors, parking areas and roadways; directs traffic as assignedAssist college population with jumpstarting, vehicle unlocking and personal escorts to vehicles as assignedProvides emergency medical treatment. (to level of certification.)Be able to complete reports of incidents and fill out work related forms.Work indoors and outdoors, sometime in extreme weather conditions and temperatureMust be able to spend extended periods standing, walking and climbing stairs; must be able to maintain a vigorous working paceAnswer telephones and communicate using portable radios and base station radios in compliance with department and FCC standardsAssist persons on campusOperate department identification card equipment, issue ID cards and parking stickersHave good interpersonal communications skills, be able to work as a team member, and have solid computer and keyboarding skillsKeep work-related topics confidentialBe exposed to verbal and possible physical abuse by irate personsPerform all duties without supervisionAssume Officer in Charge duties in the absence of the Sergeant/CaptainAssists in training newly hired officersPerforms other related duties as assignedOVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY: The primary and most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students and other members of the College community.Minimum QualificationsValid driver's license18 years of ageUnited States citizenNo criminal recordMust pass a drug screening testMust have demonstrable computer knowledge and skillsEducation Required: High school diploma or equivalentExperience Required: Six months related experience and/or successful completion of the contractual probationary period of work experience as a Rowan College at Burlington County's Public Safety Officer.Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements:No disciplinary action during the previous six monthsA positive rating on evaluationsMUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING TRAINING WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF DATE OF HIRE:Rowan College at Burlington County's Public Safety Officer Training ProgramWorkplace Harassment (as provided by Human Resources)Hazard Communication StandardDefensive DrivingAmerican Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR/AEDBlood borne PathogensICS – 100 (Online or classroom)IS – 700 (Online)Any other training deemed needed for performance of dutyOfficers in Charge have the following responsibilities:Ensure personnel are on timeEnsure personnel are in the correct uniform and have the equipment needed for their shiftEnsure personnel are fit for duty and not sick, tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs or in any other way not able to fully carry out their assigned dutiesEnsure personnel are briefed as to any incidents since their last shift, special events or duties for the shiftEnsure personnel get their required breaks for meals during the shiftEnsure that all work areas are kept neat and orderlyEnsure that all shift paperwork has been completed and properly filedPass on essential information to oncoming staffWORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors, sometime in extreme weather conditions and temperatures. Work may require long periods of standing or walking. Work may at times entail a level of risk to person. Exposed to verbal and possible physical abuse by irate persons. Shift and weekend work plus assigned to multiple campuses are a requirement of this position.Additional InformationINSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS: Collaborates with department members and/or the Compliance, Assessment and Research team to support planning, assessment, data collection and reporting for continuous improvement of the college.
