Medical Assistant Senior - Spine Care Center

Location: UPMC Spine Care Center

Primary Practice Locations:

• 2025 Technology Parkway, Suite 100, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050

• 4310 Londonderry Road, Harrisburg, PA 17109

• Travel to other UPMC Orthopedic Service Line locations may be required as needed

Schedule:

• Day Shift

• Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM

• No evenings, weekends, or holidays

Position Summary:

UPMC Spine Care Center is seeking a Medical Assistant Senior to join our growing Orthopedic Service Line. This role provides advanced clinical and administrative support to providers while helping deliver exceptional patient care and an outstanding patient experience. The Medical Assistant Senior serves as a key resource within the practice, supporting patient flow, care coordination, and clinic operations in a fast-paced specialty environment.

• Collaborate with care team members to achieve population health management goals, including improving patient access to care, reducing emergency department utilization, and decreasing hospital readmissions.

• Conduct telephone outreach to patients following hospital or emergency department discharge to schedule follow-up appointments and review medications, treatment plans, and next steps in care.

• Coordinate referrals to members of the extended care team and communicate post-discharge needs or discrepancies in care plans to providers.

• Participate in population health initiatives, patient outreach efforts, and care gap closure activities.

• Provide patient education to support healthy lifestyle choices, disease prevention, and chronic disease management.

• Promote patient engagement through wellness guidance, self-management support, motivational interviewing, and effective communication techniques that enhance health literacy.

• Demonstrate proficiency in all practice-specific clinical and administrative responsibilities.

• Guide clinical workflows and assist with task delegation to support efficient office operations.

• Support management with supervisory responsibilities, departmental initiatives, process improvement efforts, and implementation of practice goals.

• Mentor, orient, and provide ongoing training and support to new and existing staff members.

• Serve as the department Epic Care super user and resource for workflow optimization and staff education.

• Partner with leadership to identify opportunities for improvement in clinical and non-clinical operations, infection prevention protocols, and patient assessment processes.

• Facilitate routine staff meetings and communicate operational or procedural updates that enhance patient safety and service quality.

• Manage medical records in compliance with HIPAA and all applicable state and federal regulations.

• Obtain and manage laboratory reports, imaging results, hospital documentation, referral information, and other clinical records as needed.

• Complete forms, requisitions, scheduling activities, insurance verification, and demographic updates while ensuring accurate chart preparation and record management.

• Perform front-office responsibilities as needed to support daily practice operations.

• Prepare examination and procedure rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocols, and maintain infection prevention standards.

• Clean and disinfect exam rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits and according to established maintenance schedules.

• Monitor inventory levels and maintain adequate clinical supplies throughout the practice.

• Coordinate patient flow, monitor provider schedules, and assist patients throughout the visit process.

• Escort patients to examination rooms and assist with ambulation, transfers, dressing, specimen collection, and exam preparation as needed.

• Obtain patient histories, vital signs, and screening information according to provider and practice guidelines.

• Provide patient and family education and reinforce provider instructions.

• Answer incoming calls and provide appropriate information, education, and follow-up as directed.

• Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, point-of-care testing, and other clinical procedures within scope and according to policy.

• Assist providers with examinations and procedures and accurately document patient information in the electronic medical record.

• Administer injectable medications and vaccines under the direction and supervision of a physician when appropriate.

• Maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements, including OSHA, CLIA, Pennsylvania Department of Health standards, and UPMC policies and procedures.

• Protect the confidentiality and security of patient information and medical records at all times.

• Perform all duties in accordance with system-wide competencies, organizational behaviors, and departmental expectations.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Medical Assistant:

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

• Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities

Medical Assistant, Senior

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

• Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT)

• OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA)

• OR at least 1 year of patient care experience required.

• Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category specific tasks.

• Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the Medical Assistant Career Ladder, based on their individual experience and education.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

• Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

• Act 33 with renewal

• Act 34 with renewal

• Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
