Parks and Open Space Equipment Operator (Departmental Promotional Only)

Overview The Parks Department is seeking a qualified Parks and Open Space Equipment Operator. Under general supervision, the incumbent is responsible for operating heavy and complex equipment for construction, maintenance, repair, and improvement of county park and recreational facilities. Responsibilities Operate tractors, heavy trucks, loaders, excavators, and other heavy equipment to construct and maintain park roads, trails, grounds, and related facilities. Use specialized equipment for excavation, grading, preparation of ditches and trenches, and installation/repair of utilities, irrigation systems, culverts, and other infrastructure. Remove hazards and respond to storm‑related emergencies, including removal of tree stumps, hazardous trees, landslides, flood debris, and other storm damage. Operate heavy transport vehicles, dump trucks, and semitrailers to deliver equipment, materials, and supplies to various park locations. Maintain park lawns, meadows, rights‑of‑way, and landscaped areas using specialized attachments. Perform routine inspections, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment. Maintain accurate records of work completed, equipment usage, and maintenance activities. Perform other related duties as assigned. Ideal Candidate Experience operating a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, including tractors, loaders, dump trucks, and other specialized equipment used in park, road, or public works maintenance. Proficient in operating heavy equipment in rugged, uneven, and environmentally sensitive terrain. Knowledge of road construction, grading, excavation, and maintenance techniques. Strong commitment to workplace safety and safe equipment operation practices. Ability to perform routine inspections and minor maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment. Accurate estimation of project material needs and coordination of trucking services and rental equipment. Effective independent worker and team player capable of managing multiple assignments and priorities. Clear communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Accuracy in maintaining records related to equipment usage, maintenance, and project activities. Flexibility and responsiveness in addressing emergencies, storm damage, and other urgent maintenance needs throughout the county park system. Knowledge Operation and use of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. Mechanical maintenance and repair of construction equipment. Road construction and maintenance practices and techniques. Safety practices in the operation of heavy equipment. Provisions of the California Vehicle Code pertaining to the operation of trucks and other heavy equipment. Skills and Abilities Operate a variety of heavy equipment in rugged terrain. Perform minor repairs to heavy equipment. Follow written and oral instructions. Work independently without direct supervision. Estimate materials and coordinate trucking and rental equipment for projects. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical qualification is: two years of experience operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment. Licensure & Certification Must obtain a Class A California driver license or equivalent within 6 months of appointment. Eligibility Current County of San Mateo employees of the Parks Department with at least 1040 hours (six months) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra help/limited term position prior to the final filing date may apply.
