Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Clinical Trial Nurse Liaison

Overview The 5K Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Inpatient Unit at Huntsman Cancer Institute is a 24-bed inpatient unit that primarily cares for patients with hematologic malignancies (leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, etc.) who are undergoing stem cell transplantation, CAR‑T Cell Therapy, or other immunotherapies, including clinical trials. The unit supports patients through active treatment, complications, symptom management, a curative approach, or end‑of‑life care. Residents receive individualized care from a 3:1 RN-to‑patient ratio, supported by HCAs with a 6‑7:1 ratio. The unit is fast‑paced and offers opportunities for critical thinking, learning, and professional growth. RNs are skilled in IV chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration, central line care, stem cell transplantation, and CAR‑T cell therapy. Patients typically stay 3‑4 weeks, allowing staff to build strong connections with patients and families. Interdisciplinary collaboration ensures comprehensive care. Our service lines work closely with the Clinical Trials Office (CTO), providing staff the chance to see research move from "bench to bedside" in Phase 1 trials. The new Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care enhances patient and caregiver experience with amenities such as a family kitchen, laundry room, occupational therapy gym, and more. Responsibilities Assist with department management, including input on performance evaluations, interviewing, hiring, counseling employees, and budget administration. Support and facilitate operational alignment with organizational goals and strategies under the supervision of the Nurse Manager. Coordinate quality improvement initiatives. Coordinate staff education and development, including conducting in‑services, staff development programs, and orientation. Manage department staff scheduling. Investigate incident reports on patient‑care safety and counsel staff accordingly. Function as a preceptor when required. Serve as a resource for external contacts and hospital staff for coordinating repair and replacement of instruments and equipment. Maintain inventory of specialized items and ensure availability. Maintain a safe and therapeutic patient‑care environment. Perform professional staff nursing functions, including clinical expertise to support departmental operations. A minimum of two clinical nurse shifts per month is required. Work rotating schedules (variable hours, weekends, nights, holidays) to meet staffing and patient‑care demands. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform all essential functions outlined above. Ability to provide care to the complex patient population served. Demonstrated knowledge of life‑span growth and development principles, and the ability to assess patient data and provide appropriate care per policies and procedures. Demonstrated teaching and leadership abilities. Excellent human relations and communication skills. Ability to remain calm and competent in high‑stress situations. Ability to balance clinical and management responsibilities. Qualifications Required: Two years of general nursing experience. Licenses Required: Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential obtained within 30 days of hire; current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah (or obtain within 90 days under the interstate compact). Must maintain the interstate compact license if residency is not changed to Utah. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing; knowledge of clinical trials and research processes; one year of directly related experience is preferred; certifications such as ACLS, PALS, or NRP within one year of hire may be required for some positions. Working Conditions and Physical Demands Position involves intensive work that may require lifting up to 100 pounds, frequently moving medical equipment or patients.
