Senior Construction Inspector This is a continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00 pm on 4/7/26, 4/28/26, and 5/19/26 (final). Under direction, the Senior Construction Inspector inspects the construction of public works projects, including roads, bridges, drainage structures, site improvements, waste water control systems and treatment plants, water supply and distribution systems, street lighting, and traffic signal facilities required for parks, public buildings, residential and commercial development to ensure compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, standards, plans, and specifications. Examples Of Knowledge And Abilities Knowledge of The materials, methods, tools, equipment, and instruments used in road, bridge, and drainage construction and the construction and installation of sanitary and water distribution systems Grade measurement techniques Paving methods Use of pipes and conduits required for public works projects Ability to Detect flaws in construction materials Read and interpret plans and specifications Keep records and make simple drawings and reports Deal tactfully and effectively with contractors, workers, and the general public Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance Employment Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Either: 1. Two years in the class of Construction Inspector in Sacramento County service. Or: 2. Three years experience in general highway, street, or waste water control and drainage construction as an inspector in these areas or serving in a higher capacity such as a contractor's foreman or superintendent. Note: If the word “experience” is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full‑time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part‑time paid experience may be accumulated and pro‑rated to meet the total experience requirements. Special Requirements For Some Positions In This Class Some positions in this class may require expertise to inspect in one or more of the following special phases in the construction of a Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant: the installation of large electrical equipment, large pumps and mechanical equipment and/or complex structural steel and concrete. These special skills that may be used in the construction inspection of a very large and complex process treatment plant are as follows: Electrical Installation of The motor control center of electrical panels, switch gear, and lighting Instrumentation of the facility Power equipment up to 69,000 volts Automatic computerized systems Communications systems High, medium and low voltage power control circuit Mechanical Installation of Piping for cryogenic systems Hydraulic lifts and/or elevators Process equipment including pumps up to 125 mgd, grinder, conveyors, and welding connections Large heating, ventilating and air‑conditioning systems General Qualifications Licenses: A valid California Driver’s License, Class C or higher is required prior to appointment. Failure to maintain the appropriate California Driver’s License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis. Certification: Some positions in this class require incumbents to complete one year of verifiable experience in the appropriate field and, within one year thereafter, to obtain certification from a recognized state, national or international association, as determined by the County. Any person currently and continuously employed by the County as an inspector, plans examiner or building official, for not less than two years prior to January 1, 1996, is exempt from the certification requirements as outlined above. In addition, persons appointed to this class might be required to complete a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education every three years. The County may determine appropriate providers of continuing education such as community college or organizations affiliated with code enforcement. Physical Requirements Bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch Reach above the shoulder Climb ladders Lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance Walk on uneven surfaces Distinguish colors in order to visually trace colored electrical wiring, read as‑built drawings, and read Underground Service Alert markings Crawl into attics and under buildings Climb into and out of ditches and swimming pools excavations under construction Enter underground pipes through 26” manholes Working Conditions Incumbents are required to work out‑doors and in all kinds of weather. At construction sites, incumbents will be exposed to dust and fumes. Incumbents may be required to work nights and on weekends. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
