The Position This is a continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs are at 5:00pm on: 4/22/26, 5/20/26, 6/17/26, 7/15/26, 8/12/26, 9/9/26. Under general supervision, the Airport Operations Dispatcher in this class receives, evaluates, and responds to aircraft emergency, emergency 9-1-1, security, and a variety of non-emergency calls and radio traffic; receives and handles routine calls such as paging and requests for information; dispatches necessary medical, fire, law enforcement or other County personnel and equipment; monitors and operates closed‑circuit television, secure‑area badge access, and gate access systems; and prepares and maintains a variety of reports, records, and information. Examples Of Knowledge And Abilities Knowledge Of: Operations and capabilities of communications center equipment such as multiple channel radio receivers and transmitters, computer‑based phone systems, alarm signaling devices, and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system Personal computer operations including standard Microsoft Windows applications Principles, practices, and procedures of modern public safety dispatch English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Effective report‑writing techniques Principles of effective customer service Ability To: Learn and apply departmental, County, and state and federal agency regulations, policies and procedures Effectively handle multiple concurrent tasks including radio and telephone traffic, computer operations, video monitoring, and access control Operate a variety of computer, telecommunications, video and other equipment, including rapid and accurate keyboarding Remain sufficiently calm, analyze information, and make effective decisions under emergency conditions Read, understand, and apply a variety of data, visual information, maps and computer screens Receive and transmit information accurately Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Communicate effectively with customers, County staff, and emergency personnel Employment Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Either: 1a. Possession of high‑school diploma or equivalent b. Successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course, or certification in police, fire, or emergency medical dispatch from an accredited college or recognized technical program Or: 2a. Possession of high‑school diploma or equivalent b. One year of full‑time paid experience operating telecommunications and dispatching equipment; experience must include extensive public contact in a high‑volume call and/or dispatch environment while coordinating multiple concurrent tasks Note: “Experience” refers to full‑time paid experience unless volunteer experience is explicitly accepted. Part‑time paid experience may be pro‑rated. Note: Proof of educational or certificate/license requirements must be submitted with the application; failure to submit may result in disqualification. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. General Qualifications Criminal History and Background Checks: The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment, consistent with applicable laws. The County shall not consider a candidate convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that impacts the ability to perform job duties unless mitigating circumstances exist. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained. License Requirement: A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, may be required at the time of appointment. Certification Requirement: Incumbents must obtain and maintain an Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification issued by a contracted vendor within one year of appointment and recertify every two years. Special Access: Incumbents must acquire and maintain an airport security badge upon appointment. Failure to maintain special access may constitute cause for personnel action. Physical Requirements: Positions require incumbents to have sufficient hearing, color vision, hand/eye coordination, and ability to wear headsets. Incumbents must also sit and view video displays for extended periods. Working Conditions Positions require incumbents to work weekends, holidays, and shift assignments. The supplemental questions are designed to elicit specific information regarding a candidate’s experience, education, and training. FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%) All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut‑off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination. The examination evaluates the relevance, level, recency, progression, and quality of a candidate’s education, training and experience. The score determines the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order, determined by the test score.
