Fish Technician II – Yakima Klickitat Fisheries Project (YKFP) Announcement #: 2026-102 | Issue Date: 05-28-26 | Closing Date: 06-10-26 Position: Fish Technician II (2 positions) – Department of Natural Resources – Location: Toppenish – Hourly Wage: $15.74-$17.72 (Regular/Full-Time) Position Summary A Fish Technician II is responsible for residing five days a week at one of three acclimation sites located in the upper Yakima River Basin and working with Cle Elum hatchery personnel to maintain the hatchery and its acclimation sites. The technician works to spawn, incubate, rear, and release up to 800,000 Spring Chinook annually, conducting activities year‑round and may be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays. Assistance with trap operations, fish tagging/marking, spawning ground surveys, and predation work is also part of the role. Responsibilities Maintain juvenile fish acclimation sites, including preparing feed, feeding fish, maintaining adequate water flow, and recording daily water readings. Clean, perform snow removal, and carry out overall upkeep of the facility. Assist other YKFP fish crews with field tasks in the Yakima River basin. Support hatchery crew in spawning, incubation, and release of fish. Execute additional fish tagging/marking, spawning ground surveys, and predation work as required. Examples of Work Performed Maintain a juvenile fish acclimation site, including feed preparation and feeding, water flow maintenance, daily water readings, site cleaning, snow removal, and overall facility upkeep. Assist other YKFP fish crews with additional tasks in the Yakima River basin. Demonstrate strong work habits and self‑motivation. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of salmonid life history patterns and Yakima fish species identification. Knowledge of fish culture techniques. Ability to develop effective working relationships with co‑workers, tribal employees, tribal members, other agencies, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work outdoors in all kind of weather conditions. Ability to perform physical labor. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of experience as a Fish Technician I or equivalent level in natural resources fieldwork. Must pass a pre-employment drug test. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Tribal Driver's permit.
