The Stanford Medicine Sutter Health Cancer Center is seeking a highly motivated, clinically exceptional Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing Surgical Oncology Program. This unique position offers the opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary team, including a Hepatobiliary Surgeon and a Melanoma and Sarcoma Surgeon, while helping build and expand a new comprehensive cancer center scheduled to open in November 2026. This APP will practice at the top of their license within a highly collaborative and autonomous environment, providing comprehensive care across the surgical continuum. Responsibilities First assisting in the operating room. Outpatient clinic management. Inpatient rounding and consultation. Perioperative care coordination. Performance of office‑based procedures. Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty. Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of findings on new and return patients. Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated. Administer medications according to formulary protocol or upon patient‑specific approval from the supervising physician. Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products. Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services. Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable. Obtain informed consent as indicated. Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork. Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the IRB and order necessary tests and medications. Assist the supervising physician in the operating room, acting as first or second assistant under the supervision of an approved supervising physician. Perform surgical procedures in the personal presence of the supervising physician. Recognize age‑specific needs of patients. Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds. Identify situations requiring immediate attention of a physician and initiate life‑saving procedures when necessary. Facilitate the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed. Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources. Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling. Education Bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited college or university. Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (for PAs hired prior to July 1, 2012 this requirement does not apply). Licenses & Certifications Physician Assistant State Licensure Basic Life Support (BLS) Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration Compensation Base pay scale generally starting at $89.01–$117.94 per hour, with final salary determined by internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
