Medical Assistant

As a Medical Assistant, you will be responsible for accurately completing patient demographic and insurance information in the computer system. You will verify insurance eligibility and obtain benefit coverage for various medical procedures and admissions. Additionally, you will assist patients with scheduling and maintain necessary documentation for referrals and authorizations.

Responsibilities

• Complete all fields in the patient demographic and insurance screens within the computer system accurately.
• Call the patient's insurance company to verify eligibility and obtain benefit coverage for office visits, outpatient tests, surgery, and inpatient admissions.
• Obtain and document referral details and modifications for specialty care and testing for patients with insurance plans requiring formal referral documentation.
• Secure and document precertification/preauthorization numbers from insurance companies prior to surgical procedures and diagnostic tests.
• Assist patients with scheduling new patient office visits with provider offices.
• Create and distribute inpatient and outpatient service lists and manifests to surgeons.
• Process claims and re-route claims to the billing department as per assigned deadlines.
• Distribute The Admit List daily by 1 p.m. and identify possible patients for processing.
• Correct any account errors by the assigned deadline.
• Maintain communication among the physician, insurance company, and authorization status.
• Achieve a minimum average of 30 authorizations per day with proven accuracy after 3 months.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 2 years of experience in precertification.
• Working knowledge of managed care, particularly in referrals, insurance verification, and precertification.
• Proficiency in medical terminology.
• Familiarity with ICD-9 and ICD-10.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess and analyze trends.
• Detail-oriented and strong critical thinking skills.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and problem solve efficiently.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Strong desire to learn and utilize technology effectively.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Some experience with Microsoft Office.
• Flexibility to work overtime occasionally, typically when onboarding new clients.

Work Environment

This role requires 4 days in the office and 1 day remote, Monday through Friday with flexible time during the first 3 months, transitioning to 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. The position offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities to learn and grow within the medical and insurance fields.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
