Job Overview

  • Job Title: Nurse Manager, Medical-Surgical Unit
  • Department: Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg)
  • Reports To: Director of Nursing / Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)
  • Job Type: Long Term Contract
  • Shift/Schedule: Mon–Fri / 630 Am - 6/7 PM possibly (with 24/7 accountability for unit operations)
  • Salary Range: $[Insert Salary Range, e.g., 95,000 - 125,000/year] + Benefits
  • Location: Queens

Position Summary

The Nurse Manager of Medical-Surgical provides 24-hour administrative, clinical, and operational leadership for the Med-Surg inpatient unit. This individual is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care, maintaining optimal staffing levels based on patient acuity, and fostering a supportive, professional development environment for nursing staff.

The ideal candidate will combine strong clinical expertise in acute care with proven leadership, budgeting, and performance management skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical & Operational Leadership

  • 24/7 Oversight: Direct and manage day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulatory standards (TJC, CMS, OSHA, etc.).
  • Patient Care Delivery: Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams (physicians, case managers, therapy services) to implement individualized care plans and ensure timely patient discharges and transfers.
  • Staffing & Scheduling: Optimize unit staffing patterns dynamically based on daily census and patient acuity levels to meet productivity and safety metrics.

2. Personnel Management & Mentorship

  • Team Recruitment & Hiring: Interview, select, and oversee the onboarding and orientation of new nursing staff.
  • Professional Development: Mentor and coach Registered Nurses (RNs) and support staff, promoting clinical competency, shared governance, and continuous education.
  • Performance Evaluations: Conduct annual performance reviews, manage performance improvement plans, and address clinical/behavioral issues promptly.

3. Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Quality Improvement: Lead unit-level initiatives to minimize hospital-acquired conditions (e.g., falls, pressure injuries (HAPI), CLABSI/CAUTI, and medication errors).
  • Patient Satisfaction: Monitor HCAHPS scores, address patient and family grievances, and implement strategies to enhance the patient care experience.
  • Accreditation Readiness: Ensure continuous unit readiness for state audits and Joint Commission surveys.

4. Fiscal Stewardship

  • Budgeting: Assist the Director/CNO in preparing annual operational and capital budgets.
  • Resource Allocation: Manage labor costs, overtime, and unit supply inventories to meet fiscal benchmarks without compromising patient care quality.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Education & Licensure:

  • Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is highly preferred.
  • License: Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New York
  • Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

Required Experience:

  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care Medical-Surgical environment.
  • Leadership Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in a charge nurse, supervisor, or assistant manager capacity on an inpatient unit.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Comprehensive understanding of clinical practice guidelines, EMR systems, and hospital operations.
  • Outstanding communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in budgeting, staff scheduling software, and productivity analysis tools.
