Radiologic Technologist (Bone Mineral Density)

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to eliminating cancer through outstanding patient care, research, prevention, and education. The Clinical Nuclear Medicine Department supports patients through advanced imaging services that contribute to accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing care.

The Radiologic Technologist (Bone Mineral Density in the Clinical Nuclear Medicine Department) provides technical and specialized radiologic and fluoroscopic services while supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The Radiologic Technologist (Bone Mineral Density in the Clinical Nuclear Medicine Department) performs imaging procedures, maintains compliance with safety standards, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes. The Radiologic Technologist (Bone Mineral Density in the Clinical Nuclear Medicine Department) also contributes to operational excellence through technical expertise, patient advocacy, and continuous process improvement.

An ideal candidate will demonstrate strong patient care skills, technical imaging proficiency, effective communication, critical thinking, knowledge of radiation safety principles, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment. Candidates should also be committed to maintaining required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and high standards of patient care and operational excellence. Must have Bone Mineral Density (DEXA) experienced - required

Shift / Hours : Monday - Friday / 6am - 5pm (8 hour varying shifts)

Responsibilities

Patient Care & Safety

• Perform patient care activities including POCT, IV insertion, patient assessment, education, discharge support, transportation, and medication administration related to procedures.
• Screen patients and manage clinical and research evaluation processes for implanted devices to obtain imaging clearance.
• Maintain strict access control to designated clinical, technical, and supply areas.
• Apply ALARA principles and National Patient Safety Goals while ensuring patient, visitor, and staff safety.
• Recognize patient distress and assist with emergency response teams including MERIT, DIURT, Code Blue, and physician or nursing response.
• Follow infection control practices and utilize sterile or aseptic technique when applicable.
• Handle and administer contrast agents according to departmental standards and the six rights of medication administration.
• Recognize critical examination findings and immediately notify interpreting radiologists when appropriate.
• Travel to off-site patient care facilities including Bellaire Imaging Center, West Houston Imaging Center, and CABI as assigned.
• Maintain HIPAA compliance and ensure complete and accurate patient documentation.

Operations, Communication & Workflow

• Apply critical thinking using clinical history, medical records, and imaging data to support patient care decisions.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to resolve clinical questions and improve operational effectiveness.
• Manage patient flow and scheduling capacity to minimize delays and improve on-time starts.
• Expedite patient care and improve room turnaround through proactive workflow management.
• Perform downtime procedures during system failures and report to leadership for reassignment of duties.
• Utilize communication tools including whiteboards, paging systems, telephones, email, and fax responsibly and effectively.
• Ensure timely image transfer to PACS.
• Conduct verbal handoffs utilizing the SBAR communication method.
• Complete shift reports and follow up with supervisors and colleagues as needed.
• Document incidents, variances, unusual circumstances, and patient concerns within required timelines.

Quality, Education & Compliance

• Participate in quality improvement and performance initiatives that enhance workflow and patient experience.
• Engage in ongoing learning activities and apply new knowledge in daily responsibilities.
• Support education activities for patients, families, faculty, residents, students, volunteers, and staff.
• Coach, mentor, and provide training to technologists, students, and team members.
• Recommend process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce waste.
• Maintain compliance with Joint Commission standards and applicable state and federal requirements.
• Maintain required licensure, certifications, and continuing education.
• Attend and contribute to departmental meetings and educational activities.
• Complete mandatory institutional, divisional, and departmental training requirements.
• Support alignment with American College of Radiology accreditation standards and recommendations.

Technical Acumen & Equipment Management

• Perform routine, advanced, inpatient, immediate care, and on-call imaging procedures with a high level of technical proficiency.
• Ensure correct imaging site verification, positioning, annotation, and imaging parameters.
• Apply knowledge of anatomy and pathology to obtain optimal diagnostic information.
• Demonstrate understanding of MRI physics and scanner parameter manipulation to achieve high-quality imaging results.
• Maintain productivity and quality standards established by the department.
• Minimize imaging errors and maintain benchmark performance levels.
• Independently operate assigned imaging equipment and perform required quality assurance activities.
• Report equipment malfunctions to engineering, physics, supervisory, and management teams.
• Perform general x-ray procedures when patient care needs require support.
• Accurately enter information into RIS, Clinic Station, CARE, whiteboards, and modality imaging systems, including charges, supplies, procedure codes, and patient demographics.

Environmental & Supply Management

• Maintain cleanliness and organization of imaging rooms, dressing rooms, and workspaces.
• Stock, transport, and distribute supplies throughout the section.
• Dispose of used linens and designated materials according to departmental procedures.
• Monitor personnel and patient care environments to ensure radioactive material levels meet regulatory requirements.
• Decontaminate work and patient care areas when necessary.
• Dispose of contrast materials, disposable coils, and other designated items properly.
• Assist with maintenance logs, Zip Rounds, crash cart inspections, refrigerator checks, and temperature monitoring.
• Support a safe and compliant environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

EDUCATION
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent and
  • Successful completion of an accredited program by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

  • Required: BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire or
  • Required: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Upon Hire
