Police Officer

Reports To: Chief of Police FSLA: Non Exempt Summary A police officer prevents, detects, and investigates all crime, enforces traffic laws and regulations, and investigates accidents. The goal is to provide a safe and secure campus and to assist faculty, staff and students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Enforce all Federal, State, County and Municipal Codes, Statutes or Ordinances, and arrest offenders of same if the situation warrants such action. Enforce all East Central University Rules and Regulations referred to them for enforcement. Protect life and property against criminal attack and to preserve the peace. Provide protection against any harmful acts, both willful and inadvertent, whether of a criminal or non-criminal basis. The enforcement of all traffic and parking regulations on and around East Central University within the guidelines of the State Laws, City Ordinances and University traffic and parking regulations in order to prevent accidents, decrease traffic congestion and ensure the safety of all persons within the campus environment. Patrol the campus by vehicle and foot in order to protect and guard all persons, grounds, buildings and equipment from harm, damage or destruction by others. Cooperate with all local law enforcement agencies. Investigate all criminal acts, process the recovery of stolen property, write reports on all incidents and make follow-up reports as required. Prepare case records for presentation to appropriate court for filing of charges and testify as required. Make original and follow-up investigations of all motor vehicle accidents and testify in criminal court as required. Handle all emergencies, disorders, and special University events and keep the Chief of Police and supervisors informed of all important matters. Inform the Chief of Police and supervisors of all arrests as soon as possible. Provide public service to all persons on campus, giving information, directions, assistance and comfort to those in distress. To be called out, if not on duty, in times of emergency or when other situations arise that additional help is needed. Must have a strong work ethic and lead by example. Must be a professional, credible and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community. Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible. Must be able to lift more than 50-lb. objects; frequent bending, stooping, and walking. Can be exposed to a variety of weather conditions for periods of time. Ability to communicate in a courteous manner. Any additional police duties that may be required by Chief of Police. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or equivalent; CLEET Police Officer Certified, must complete a minimum of 25hrs CLEET continuing education to include 2hrs mental health and firearms requalification per year to retain certification. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, or oral form. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Successful completion of the Council of Law Enforcement Education and Training Program for Police Officers. Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license. Other Skills and Abilities Successful completion of college level courses in criminal justice or law enforcement preferred. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
