At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care. This is a hybrid opportunity with preferred locations of Columbus, OH or Des Moines, IA. A remote environment would be considered based on skills and experience. Position Summary The Personal Lines Billing team is seeking a skilled Quality Engineer with strong Mainframe testing experience and a background in billing application validation, backend data analysis, and test automation. This role will support the quality and reliability of critical billing systems across Mainframe batch processing, end-to-end billing flows, performance testing, and modern automation capabilities. This role is best suited for an experienced quality professional who can navigate a complex, highly integrated billing environment; execute and validate Mainframe batch jobs; query DB2 data to confirm backend results; and apply a practical mix of low-code, no-code, and light scripting techniques to improve testing efficiency. The ideal candidate brings strong defect management and analytical skills, along with the adaptability to apply modern tools such as Playwright, AI-assisted test generation, and the Tosca automation framework. PLS Billing is a financially critical platform where testing decisions directly affect customer experience, financial accuracy, downstream system stability, and delivery confidence. The team needs someone who can combine thoughtful test planning with hands-on execution, clear communication, and sound judgment while helping modernize the way billing quality is validated. What You’ll Do Plan and execute functional, integration, regression, performance, and end-to-end testing for Personal Lines Billing capabilities. Execute and validate Mainframe batch jobs, including reviewing job results, processing outcomes, and expected billing behavior. Perform end-to-end billing testing across policy, account, payment, billing, and downstream processing flows. Develop and execute performance tests using JMX and load-testing scripts to evaluate application behavior, capacity, and scalability. Query DB2 using SQL to validate backend data, billing transactions, account and policy states, and downstream results. Create, maintain, and execute automated tests using Playwright, including AI-assisted test generation where appropriate. Use the Tosca automation framework and other low-code or no-code tools to expand efficient, repeatable test coverage. Analyze, document, prioritize, and manage defects through resolution, including clear evidence, impact assessment, and retest results. Partner with developers, product owners, analysts, and other testers to clarify requirements, identify risks, and define effective test scenarios. Contribute to reusable regression coverage and continuous improvement of testing practices, tools, and documentation. What You’ll Bring Mainframe and billing testing skills Experience testing Mainframe-based applications and navigating batch processing environments. Ability to execute, monitor, and validate Mainframe batch jobs and interpret processing results. Experience performing end-to-end testing for complex billing, financial, or other transaction-oriented systems. Understanding of test environments, test data, job sequencing, and validation of expected business outcomes. Data and backend validation Strong DB2 SQL querying skills and experience validating backend data. Ability to reconcile application results against database records, billing transactions, and expected account or policy states. Strong analytical skills for tracing data across integrated systems and identifying root causes of defects. Automation and modern testing tools Experience with Playwright or a comparable modern web test automation framework. Experience using AI-assisted or AI-driven approaches to generate, enhance, or maintain automated tests. Experience with the Tosca automation framework or similar low-code/no-code testing tools. Ability to use light scripting when needed to support test execution, data preparation, analysis, or automation. Experience with performance testing concepts, JMX, and load-testing scripts. Quality engineering and collaboration Strong experience with test planning, test design, execution, results analysis, and regression testing. Demonstrated strength in defect management, including writing clear defects, assessing impact, supporting triage, and validating fixes. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams. Ability to learn new technologies and testing approaches while maintaining a practical focus on quality, risk, and delivery. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate brings Mainframe testing depth first, strong DB2 and backend validation skills second, and practical automation experience across Playwright, Tosca, performance testing, and light scripting. They should be comfortable working through complex billing flows, interpreting batch results, validating data at the source, and managing defects to resolution. This person is curious, analytical, and adaptable. They can work effectively in a low-code or no-code testing environment while also using scripting and AI-assisted tools to improve coverage and efficiency. They understand that quality in PLS Billing requires more than confirming that a screen or service responds correctly—it requires proving that the complete billing outcome, financial data, and downstream behavior are accurate and reliable.
