Summary About the Position: This position is located in the inpatient pharmacy at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Duties Plan work, set priorities, and prepare schedules for civilian pharmacy technicians. Evaluate performance, provide instruction, handle complaints, and identify training needs. Provide formal and informal training on pharmacy automated systems. Evaluate and recommend new software/equipment to improve efficiency and healthcare delivery. Coordinate with IT and logistics for the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of pharmacy systems. Perform troubleshooting, manage hardware inventory, and ensure all systems are compliant with regulations. Perform and oversee all inpatient pharmacy operations, including prescription evaluation, sterile and non-sterile compounding, and medication dispensing. Ensure compliance with facility and regulatory standards for the IV clean room and safe handling of hazardous drugs. This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required. This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required. This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS. This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis. This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire). Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position. This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing. This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations. Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing and dispensing a range of medications, maintaining automated medication dispensing equipment, adhering to sterile compounding and handling standards, and providing training to staff members in an inpatient pharmacy setting. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Pharmacology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
