Parks Construction Specialist I (Job ID: 1323) Location: 11921 Hardy Street, Johnson, Overland Park, KS 66213, US Employment Type: Full-Time Working Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday Pay Range: GRADE A: $19.36 – $21.51 per hour Application Deadline: Open until filled Benefits: Full Time Job Summary Performs a wide variety of semi‑skilled and skilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation facilities and grounds. Assists with special events. Key Responsibilities Perform construction tasks including carpentry, masonry, electrical work, plumbing, irrigation repairs, asphalt and concrete patching, painting, welding, and playground equipment repair. Operate heavy machinery and specialized tools such as loaders, excavators, tractors, dump trucks, trenchers, and trailers, and maintain equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Enforce safety protocols, conduct safety meetings, and address potential hazards on site. Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve construction‑related issues, including design changes and unforeseen challenges. Maintain effective communication with team members, subcontractors, and project stakeholders. Assist in emergency operations such as snow removal and storm damage call‑outs. Perform maintenance on bike/hike trails, including asphalt repair, debris removal, bridge maintenance, and installation work. Prepare site work such as grading, staking, measuring, forming, placing, and finishing concrete; perform backfilling, roofing, and general construction duties. Requirements Basic education or equivalent experience. Valid driver's license and insurable driving record. Must obtain a Class A commercial driver's license with air‑brake and tanker endorsement within six months of employment. 1–3 years of experience as a construction worker in general or related trades. Strong leadership, communication, problem‑solving, and critical‑thinking skills. Proficiency in irrigation, carpentry, masonry, electrical work, and machinery operation. Knowledge of and ability to enforce safety protocols. Ability to work independently and train others. Experience 1 to 3 years in general construction trades or facility maintenance, including operation of loaders, dump trucks, power tools, and construction equipment. Skills Excellent oral communication. Project management and organizational skills. Time‑management and multitasking. Manual dexterity, attention to detail, and aptitude for reading technical plans. Mental and Physical Requirements Mental: Work in hectic environments, prioritize multiple tasks, analyze safety situations, follow oral and written instructions, train and guide others, assess situations and recommend solutions, alpha and numeric recognition. Physical: Travel to and inspect City facilities, traverse rough terrain, operate power and hand tools, operate City vehicles, work in confined spaces, coordinate hand‑eye control for computer input, exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, sprays, fogs, mists, heights, vibrations, high voltage, loud noises, and extreme weather conditions, make and receive phone calls, and distinguish smells and colors. Other Information No City residency requirement. Must successfully pass a background check, drug screen, physical exam, and essential functions test. No supervisory responsibility (direct & indirect).
