Staff Engineer-Civil Location: Seattle, WA, US The Opportunity Focus on large-scale water and wastewater infrastructure projects, leading significant portions of a variety of facilities throughout the design and construction cycle, and startup phases as a technical specialist or lead. Hands‑on involvement in developing reports or technical memos, completing studies, detailed designs, and specifications, collaborating to complete cost estimates, and preparing contract documents. Participation in scheduling, budgeting, and contract administration for infrastructure projects, including involvement in business development and preparation of proposals. Coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects. Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects. Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work. Key Responsibilities Perform design of projects from the conceptual and bid phase through design completion for project needs and requirements set by project managers based on client needs. Assist the Engineering Manager in maintaining project schedules and budgets. Assist the Engineering Manager in managing sub‑consultants. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, interface directly with the client or sub‑consultants. Support business development through writing of technical approaches, scopes of work, and presentation to clients. Utilize knowledge of civil concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the water engineering industry. Apply knowledge to complex projects, find and develop non‑standard design solutions to better serve client specifications. Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced engineers. Communicate effectively with other engineering disciplines and project team. Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables. Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Prepare complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles; manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Review engineering work and/or assignments of early career professionals. Be responsible for overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work; lead smaller production teams; and serve as the responsible charge for a project. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline. Licensed PE or ability and interest to obtain PE and/or be in active pursuit of registration. Thorough understanding of water and wastewater design (infrastructure, conveyance, pump stations/lift stations). Ability and motivation to lead portions of complex projects with guidance and mentorship. Minimum Qualifications Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of 5 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, including background checks and other compliance checks. Certifications Professional engineering registration preferred or in active pursuit. Work Environment/Physical Demands Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion. Typical office environment, typical construction environment, extreme weather conditions, high noise level, safety hazards (electric currents, scaffolding, high places, exposure to chemicals). Physical demands include sitting, walking, talking, hearing, reading, writing, keyboarding, driving, filing, reaching, stooping, crouching, bending, standing for extended periods, and lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.
