Position Overview
The Sommelier role is responsible for delivering exceptional hospitality while leading the restaurant’s wine service with professionalism, expertise, and attention to detail. Sommeliers serve as ambassadors for the Straker’s beverage program, guiding guests through the wine list, making thoughtful pairings, and creating memorable dining experiences through knowledgeable and personalized service.
The ideal candidate is hospitality-driven, passionate about wine, and committed to delivering an elevated guest experience through education, service, and genuine enthusiasm.
Responsibilities
- Guide guests through the restaurant’s wine program and provide thoughtful pairing recommendations
- Deliver knowledgeable, attentive, and personalized wine service throughout the dining experience
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the restaurant’s wine list, beverage offerings, and menu
- Assist with wine service, decanting, bottle presentation, and proper service techniques
- Support wine inventory, organization, storage, and cellar maintenance
- Assist with receiving, stocking, and rotating wine deliveries
- Support ongoing wine education and training for the front-of-house team
- Ensure wine service standards are executed consistently throughout the restaurant
- Communicate effectively with service, kitchen, and management teams to support seamless operations
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and team-oriented work environment
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in a sommelier, wine steward, or wine-focused restaurant role preferred
- Strong knowledge of wine regions, varietals, producers, and food pairings
- Passion for hospitality and creating exceptional guest experiences
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Interest in ongoing wine education; formal certification (CMS, WSET, or equivalent) preferred but not required
- Ability to multitask and remain composed in a fast-paced environment
- Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 pounds
