NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. Possession of a current driver's license. Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

JOB DUTIES

Officers with DPS perform a variety of functions, ranging from conducting proactive police patrols to providing security at important locations throughout the state. At these locations, officers are tasked with providing police protection to elected officials, state employees, and inmates, as well as visitors of these locations. Conducts proactive police patrols, issues citations, investigates crashes, and responds to all calls for service. Patrols assigned area to deter and prevent criminal activity. Investigates crashes, keeps bystanders out of danger, renders first aid, questions drivers and witnesses and prepares narrative reports of conditions and causes of crashes. Supervises the removal of injured persons and vehicles to restore highway safety and normal traffic flow. Regularly conducts investigations of any crime or complaint within the patrol area; documents findings and enlists assistance if necessary. May serve as a Field Training Officer for newly hired officers. Inspects and maintains equipment. When you apply, you will be applying for all of these positions. Typical job duties include: Capitol Detail Officers assigned to these duties conduct proactive police patrols of the State Capitol Complex and downtown Baton Rouge. Officers enforce state and local laws and ordinances, conduct proactive traffic and criminal enforcement, investigate crimes, and prevent and deter unlawful activity. In addition to their police duties, officers frequently act as ambassadors of the state as they interact with visitors to our great state. State Facilities Security Officers assigned to these duties provide police protection to thousands of state employees and visitors throughout Louisiana. These officers enforce state and local laws and ordinances, conduct frequent security patrols, investigate crimes, and prevent and deter unlawful activity. Headquarters Patrol Officers assigned to these duties conduct proactive police patrols of the Louisiana State Police Headquarters compound. Officers enforce state and local laws and ordinances, conduct proactive traffic and criminal enforcement, investigate crimes, and prevent and deter unlawful activity. In addition, officers provide security to the hundreds of employees who work on the compound, as well as monitoring the offenders who are working on the compound. State Police Barracks Officers assigned to these duties provide care, custody, and control of the offenders housed at the State Police Barracks. They transport them to and from their daily job assignments, hospital trips, funeral trips, etc. During visitation and special events, they interact with the family and friends of the offenders. POSITION-SPECIFIC DETAILS

Positions are available in the Office of State Police and may be assigned to any parish statewide. The specific location will be determined when the section is prepared to hire. Applicants must live within 75 miles of their assigned location. Applicants who do not meet the residency requirements will be rejected. POST-certified applicants are encouraged to apply.

This position is in a Career Progression Group and may be filled as a DPS Police Cadet, Officer, Sr. Officer, or Corporal, depending on the experience of the selected applicant.

WORK SCHEDULE

Work hours are 24 hrs/7 days. This position requires shift work (days, nights, weekends, and holidays).

COMPENSATION

The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Salary ranges from a minimum of $42,016/year for a DPS Police Cadet to a maximum of $92,851/year for a DPS Police Corporal. Applicants must be able to qualify with firearms, complete advanced driver and weapons training, pass a thorough background investigation, and meet all annual training requirements. Non-POST certified applicants may be required to pass a physical assessment that consists of a timed 1.5-mile run, push-ups, and sit-ups.
