Lead Field Service Technician

Lead Field Service Technician We're looking for a Lead Field Service Technician with extensive field experience and leadership capability to support electrical system projects across the U.S. In this hands-on role, you'll lead field crews, execute testing and commissioning plans, and troubleshoot complex issues in power plants, substations, and industrial facilities. You'll take ownership of day-to-day site operations and play a key role in mentoring technicians while ensuring quality and safety in the field. What You'll Do: Lead testing and maintenance on LV to HV systems (480V600kV), including breakers (air, SF6, vacuum), relays, cables, motor controls, and transformers Run advanced diagnostics using Power Factor, Tan Delta, VLF, DC Hi-Pot, Doble, TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, and contact resistance tests Perform and validate electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relay testing Oversee test plan execution and commissioning procedures for new systems, retrofits, and upgrades Supervise onsite field crewsdelegate tasks, mentor technicians, and uphold technical and safety standards Enforce compliance with project specifications, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, and job hazard analysis requirements Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas Maintain accurate test reports, service records, and commissioning documentation Serve as the lead field contact for clientscommunicate status updates and coordinate project requirements Oversee the care and readiness of test gear, vehicles, and tools Direct emergency response, shutdowns, and start-ups with minimal supervision Coach and support junior team members through on-the-job mentorship The Experience We're Looking For: 10+ years of experience in power plant, utility, or industrial power systems NETA Level III or IV strongly preferred; journeyman or equivalent advanced credentials also accepted Expert-level experience with protection & control systems, relay testing, and high-voltage commissioning Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and PowerDB for documentation Ability to lead teams, delegate tasks, and make sound decisions under pressure Thorough knowledge of NETA standards and safety regulations Additional Requirements: Willingness to travel at least 75%, including overnight stays and flexible scheduling High school diploma or GED required Valid driver's license Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests Available for flexible hours, overtime, and occasional weekends, holidays, or nights Able to work outdoors in all weather, at heights (100+ ft), in confined spaces, and around high-voltage equipment and heavy machinery Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs and enduring extended physical activity Requires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments Annual safety training may require travel outside your assigned region Bonus Points for: NETA Level IV certification or recognized expert-level credentials Completion of a trade school program, technical college, associate degree, or skilled trade certification in welding or a related field is strongly preferred TWIC card Experience leading commissioning crews and mentoring junior technicians Deep familiarity with power plant environments and substation retrofits Why Join RMS Energy: Competitive Compensation Overtime potential and merit-based raises Full Benefits Medical, dental, and vision coverage fully paid for employees, starting the month after hire Steady Employment & Career Growth Be part of a fast-growing company with promotion potential 401(k) with Company Match Traditional & Roth options + free investment guidance Top-Tier Equipment Provided to support you in the field Compensated Travel Time plus Per Diem Earn while seeing new places Education Support Paid training, certifications, and industry memberships Generous PTO Paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave Employee Assistance Program Legal, financial, and mental wellness support Want to be part of something meaningful?
