Job Description Summary The Emergency Department Technician II reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Emergency Department Technician III performs multi‑skilled activities to support a decentralized patient‑centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes. Entity Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA) Qualifications and Experience High School diploma or GED required. Preferred experience working as a Patient Care Tech, nursing assistant, or nursing student enrolled in an accredited institution with the completion of one Adult Medical/Surgical course with hands‑on clinical experience. Minimum of 1 year of patient‑care experience in a healthcare environment or certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Within six months of hire date, must successfully pass online course modules, phlebotomy training and skills validation for basic and advanced skills, and EKG training. Passing requires an 80% score on each test in two attempts or termination. Successful completion of the Emergency Department Technician unit‑specific training and competency demonstration is required within the first six months of employment or termination. Licensure, Certifications, and Registrations BLS certification with Red Cross or AHA. Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing (frequent), sitting (frequent), walking (frequent), climbing stairs (infrequent), working indoors (continuous), from elevated areas (frequent), in confined/cramped spaces (infrequent), from kneeling positions (infrequent), bending at the waist (frequent), squatting (infrequent). Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders (frequent). Ability to reach in all directions (frequent); possess good finger dexterity (continuous). Ability to fully use both legs and both hands/arms (continuous). Ability to lift and carry 15 lbs unassisted (infrequent); lift/lower objects 15 lbs from/to floor up to 36 inches unassisted (infrequent); lift from 36 inches to overhead 15 lbs (infrequent). Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes (continuous). Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance (continuous). Ability to match or discriminate between colors (continuous). Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception (continuous). Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction (continuous). Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine‑motor movements (continuous). Ability to work in a latex‑safe environment (continuous). Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions (frequent). Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function (frequent). Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required (continuous). Additional Job Description Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Experience: At least 1 year in a 0.6 FTE ED Technician I position at MUSC or a Certified Nursing Assistant, EMT, CMA, Paramedic, Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), or a military medical occupation; or at least 1 year of inpatient hospital experience; or a college degree; or active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution; or active enrollment in a healthcare‑related field from an accredited institution. Credentials: Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire; thereafter, must maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
