POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT/TRAINEE

Position Overview The Torrance Police Department is a premier law‑enforcement agency that serves a community of more than 147,000 residents within a 22‑square‑mile area. Its mission is to preserve public safety and quality of life within the City of Torrance, respond effectively to the changing needs of the community, and promote mutual respect between the Police Department and the people we serve. New Hire Incentive Pay Base signing bonus of $20,000; additional $20,000 for military veterans. Total signing bonus up to $40,000. Base Compensation and Benefits During the Police Academy, recruits/trainees are paid $7,280 per month plus up to $1,786.58 per month for family health‑care coverage and a one‑time uniform allowance of $850. Upon graduation of the Police Academy, officers begin making $8,307 per month. Additional benefits include health‑care contributions, uniform allowance, and background‑investigation clearance. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical pathways include graduation from high school or equivalent. License and/​or Certificate Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver’s License. California State Minimum Selection Standards All candidates must meet California State Minimum Selection Standards. Examination Process California POST PELLET‑B Written Test (Weighted 30%) Panel Interview (Weighted 70%) Physical Agility Test (Qualifying) The City of Torrance uses the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Entry‑Level Law Enforcement Test Battery PELLET‑B and will accept scores from other agencies within one year of the written test date. The passing T‑score is 44.2. Candidates who have taken the POST Entry‑Level test at another agency and received a T‑score of 44.2 or higher within the last 12 months must attach a copy of the T‑score to their application. Applicants may test for this position only once in a six‑month period. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list for hire for a period of three months. Applicants with disabilities who require special testing arrangements must contact Human Resources prior to the examination date(s). Background Investigation Candidates must pass each component of the exam process and a thorough background investigation, which will include job and personal references, arrest records, credit history, use of controlled substances, medical and psychological evaluations, drug screening, and a polygraph.
