Registered Nurse, Elective Surgery, PRN (Nights) - VUH

Overview Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Registered Nurse to join the new 17‑bed Specialty Post‑Surgical (10S) Elective Surgery Unit. The unit will open 6/25/26 and focuses on rapid mobilization, pain management, and discharge readiness for adult patients (ages 18 to 100) undergoing elective procedures across general surgery, orthopedics, hernia, foregut, and bariatric specialties. Position Highlights Fast‑paced, specialized post‑surgical care on a brand new unit Patient‑to‑nurse ratio 1:5–6 Predictable, structured workflow with lengths of stay 24hrs to 2–3days All shifts are night (7p‑m to 7a‑m) – PRN requirement: 3 shifts in a six‑week period Responsibilities Collaborate in establishing the plan of care and coordinate its implementation across the continuum of care. Apply the nursing process to evaluate patient progress toward goals and intervene appropriately. Provide patient and family education and ensure admission, discharge, and continuity of care planning. Anticipate patient needs, prioritize work, and adapt to changes with minimal disruption. Promote health and maintain a safe environment. Participate in evidence‑based practice, continual learning, and professional growth to meet Board of Nursing standards. Qualifications Registered Nurse – State or Compact license; TN license within 60days if compact. Minimum 1 year RN experience. Graduate of an approved discipline‑specific program. Basic proficiency in nursing assessment, care planning, and patient education. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills. Shift & Schedule PRN requirement: 3 night shifts (7p‑m to 7a‑m) in each six‑week scheduling cycle.
