Position Overview School: School of Public Safety & Industrial Technology – Emergency Medical Services Employment: Full‑time, 12‑month contract, $66,864 annually (24th in the classified salary schedule) FLSA Status: Non‑exempt Hours of Work Hours vary by semester based on student and departmental needs. Fall Semester (Aug 24 – Dec 22): Monday off; Tuesday 7:00 am‑5:30 pm (10 hrs); Wednesday 7:00 am‑4:30 pm (9 hrs); Thursday 6:00 am‑6:30 pm (12 hrs); Friday 7:00 am‑4:30 pm (9 hrs) Winter & Spring Semester (Jan 4 – Jun 11): Monday off; Tuesday 6:00 am‑6:30 pm (12 hrs); Wednesday 7:00 am‑3:30 pm (8 hrs); Thursday 6:00 am‑6:30 pm (12 hrs); Friday 7:00 am‑3:30 pm (8 hrs) Summer Session (Jun 12 – Aug 20): Monday 7:00 am‑4:30 pm (9 hrs); Tuesday 7:00 am‑5:30 pm (10 hrs); Wednesday 6:00 am‑6:30 pm (12 hrs); Thursday 7:00 am‑4:30 pm (9 hrs); Friday off Employee Benefits District‑paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employee and dependents District‑paid $50,000 life insurance policy Participation in CalPERS; 20 paid holidays; up to 12 paid sick days and 12 paid vacation days (may increase up to 22 days per year based on service) Definition Under direction, plans, coordinates and performs technical or vocational instructional assistance activities using reinforcement and/or demonstrations in a specialized or technical instructional lab or shop environment; demonstrates and assists students with the safe and proper operation of equipment and tools; troubleshoots and performs routine adjustments, maintenance, and repair on a variety of lab equipment and tools; prepares lab exercises, demonstrations, and teaching aids; prepares and maintains records related to lab activities; assists students in the technical aspects of lab procedures; and performs related duties as assigned. Supervision Receives direction from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Class Characteristics Responsible for independently performing duties in support of vocational or technical instructional demonstrations and reinforcement in a lab or shop environment. Uses judgment and initiative, receives only occasional instruction or assistance for new or unusual situations, and is fully aware of operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Typical Job Functions Provide technical and vocational instructional support and reinforcement to students and staff in instructional labs; assist students with lab and/or shop assignments, exercises, experiments, projects, and/or repairs. Prepare the lab/shop environment and materials needed for demonstrations, exercises, assignments, and activities to correspond with curriculum and theory; research and recommend supplemental lab exercises; purchase supplies, equipment, tools, machinery, and other related materials. Maintain the lab/shop, ensuring a clean and orderly environment; store, maintain, distribute, and account for inventory of equipment, machinery, tools, software, and other related materials. Coordinate with instructors to establish supplies and capital equipment outlay budgets; assist instructors in identifying instructional supplies and equipment needs; research equipment prices; prepare requisitions and orders within budgets and purchasing guidelines; purchase materials as needed. Perform inspections and calibrations on equipment; adjust and maintain equipment; troubleshoot and perform maintenance on lab equipment, machinery, tools or other items; arrange for equipment repair or replacement; load, restore, and restart lab equipment, computers, and programs; perform data or software backups. Assure proper labeling and identification of container contents and hazardous materials; notify instructor of special handling procedures; dispose of hazardous materials after use. Perform clerical duties; prepare, update, and store student and class records and files, including scores, exams, progress, and attendance; update handouts, brochures, and other materials; maintain records and reports related to safety, waste inventory, and disposal. Orient, demonstrate, and provide instructions to students on proper operation of lab/shop machinery, tools, equipment, computers, and related materials. Collect and report data to anticipate current and future needs of the instructional lab/shop; prepare and update lab reports for faculty and administrators. Observe and control student behavior according to approved procedures; track and report progress regarding student performance, attendance, and behavior. Assist in coordinating, scheduling, advertising, directing, and curating events related to the instructional area. Provide training and work direction to student workers and/or lab tutors. Work productively and cooperatively with others; demonstrate respect, patience, and equitable treatment of all internal and external customers. Observe and comply with district and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Perform other related duties as assigned. Education and Experience Education: Equivalent to an associate degree with coursework relevant to the assigned area of instructional specialty or field of vocational career training. Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing lab technical support work relevant to the assigned area of instructional specialty or field of vocational career training. Licenses and Certifications Valid California Driver’s License, maintained throughout employment. Valid license or certification required to perform work in the assigned area of instructional specialty, maintained throughout employment. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a healthcare, emergency medical services, clinical, hospital, or patient‑care setting. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, patient care procedures, and healthcare industry standards. Physical Demands Office Work: Mobility to work in a standard office and lab setting; vision, hearing, speech to communicate; suitable for standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 10 lbs. Field/Shop Work: Mobility, strength, stamina to perform medium to heavy physical work; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 lbs; ability to work on uneven or slippery surfaces; use equipment; climb ladders; operate motor vehicle. Environmental Conditions Office Environment: Moderate noise, controlled temperature; no direct exposure to hazardous substances; may interact with upset staff or public. Field/Shop Environment: Loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous substances and fumes, dust and air contaminants. Knowledge Operational characteristics and safe use of tools, equipment, hardware, and software in assigned lab/shop. College curriculum and education requirements of assigned subject area. Safe handling and storage of hazardous materials, chemicals, equipment. Instructional reinforcement and tutorial techniques for students. Use of diagnostic tools and equipment. Materials Data Safety Sheets (MSDS). Troubleshooting equipment, components, devices used in labs. Health and safety practices for maintenance and repair of lab equipment and machinery. District purchasing policies and procedures. Inventory control methods. Record‑keeping, data collection, and report preparation. Providing work direction and training. District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Customer service interactions with diverse students, staff, faculty, external organizations, and the public. English language structure, meaning, spelling, grammar. Modern equipment and communication tools for business functions, project and task coordination. Abilities Perform advanced instructional reinforcement and demonstrations in assigned lab/shop. Provide instructional support and advice to students on availability and uses of instructional materials and equipment. Coordinate and monitor use of lab/shop and related equipment. Troubleshoot and maintain lab equipment. Tutor students on proper and safe operation of equipment and tools. Operate a variety of computers, tools, equipment, and machinery of the assigned instructional shop or lab. Issue and receive equipment and supplies; ensure care and security of assigned equipment. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Maintain records and prepare reports. Interpret and apply laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to work performed. Observe and report student performance, attendance, behavior. Organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, follow up on assignments. Use tact, initiative, prudence, independent judgment within policy and procedural guidelines. Use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform various work tasks. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds of community college students.
