Roadway Maintenance Tech (Trans Maintenance Tech) I/II/III – South Travis Maintenance (Austin District) (2601467) TxDOT's Austin District is looking for one Roadway Maintenance Tech (Trans Maintenance Tech II or III) based in Austin, TX. The role performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor equipment maintenance, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees. Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with standards. Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards and comfort stations. Mows rights‑of‑way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush. Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional Duties – Trans Maintenance Tech II Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications; identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems. Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications. Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station. Additional Duties – Trans Maintenance Tech III Inspect routine and non‑routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications. Trains other employees. Minimum Qualifications Experience: Roadway Maintenance Tech I: No experience required. Roadway Maintenance Tech II: 1 year experience. Roadway Maintenance Tech III: 2 years experience. Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license at the time of application. Must obtain a Commercial Class “A” Driver's License within 12 months from date of employment. Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days of employment (or whatever number of days deemed appropriate). Military Skills Test Waiver available. Preferred Qualifications: Commercial Driver’s License, preferably with no transmission restrictions. Competencies Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work. Use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade. Use of light and heavy highway equipment. Maintaining a safe working relationship with others. Follow verbal and written instructions. Applicable inspection methods, procedures, and techniques. Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance, and repair procedures. Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes. Prioritizing and organizing work assignments. Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems. Physical Requirements Balancing, walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling. Reaching, extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Visual acuity – operating motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. Visual acuity – determining work quality / making general observations of facilities/structures. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
