Controller

Highly Competitive Salary, Bonus, and Benefits Package J MAR's client, a privately held family office with interests in upstream oil and gas and a diverse investment portfolio, is seeking a Controller to serve as the senior accounting leader across multiple entities. Reporting directly to the President, the Controller will provide financial leadership, oversee regulatory and financial reporting, and support strategic business initiatives while partnering closely with ownership.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

Lead accounting and financial reporting for multiple operating entities. Serve as a trusted advisor to ownership and company leadership. Ensure the integrity of financial records, internal controls, and regulatory reporting. Partner with engineering and land teams to support accurate reserve and ownership reporting. Mentor and develop an experienced accounting team. Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and reporting capabilities as the company continues to grow.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting Leadership & Operations Oversee day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including general ledger integrity across operating entities and affiliated entities. Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, ensuring staff have the tools, training, and support needed to perform at a high level. Ensure accurate and complete account reconciliations to identify and resolve potential errors or concerns. Review intercompany and equity transactions to ensure proper recording and elimination. Safeguard company assets through the design, implementation, and monitoring of strong internal controls. Continually reassess accounting processes, software solutions, and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and accommodate growth. Deliver timely and accurate monthly and quarterly financial reports. Manage monthly and quarterly production and sales reporting for federal, state, and other agencies. Coordinate and lead the quarterly financial review. Work with third-party tax preparers to compile data required for timely and accurate federal and state tax filings. Prepare financial analyses and reporting that support ownership’s evaluation of business performance and strategic initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field with sufficient accounting coursework to qualify for the CPA exam. Active CPA license preferred. 10+ years of progressive upstream oil & gas accounting and supervisory experience. Strong understanding of GAAP basis financial reporting as related to upstream oil and gas. Working knowledge of ARO, DD&A, Impairment, and reserve-based reporting. Demonstrated Excel skills for data analysis, reconciliations, and financial reporting. Experience utilizing oil and gas accounting software. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting professionals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the organization.
