Seasonal Maintenance Worker Supervisor

Summary This position will be utilized to supervise seasonal staff members in a wide variety of duties. Maintenance is responsible for the design, construction, repair, rehabilitation, restoration, maintenance, and operation of the Lakeshore infrastructure. We care for the preservation of historic structures, cultural landscapes, archaeological and ethnographic resources. Responsibilities Supervise multiple workers performing a full range of routine facility maintenance, construction, and/or rehabilitation type work for the organization Knowledge of trade crafts in two or more of the following areas: carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, or painting. Knowledge and understanding of agency software and programs which use is required in average supervisory duties Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications received by the initial cutoff date will be considered first. INITIAL CUT OFF IS Monday, March 9, 2026 Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement however additional referral certificates will only be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Drug Testing: You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Government Housing: Housing is NOT available. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Lead Or Supervise Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Vehicle Operation SCREEN OUTS: Minimum Qualifications: Have a knowledge of trade crafts in one of the following areas: carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, heating/cooling, and painting. Have personally supervised multiple workers performing custodial, facility maintenance helper or laborer work. Supervisory duties included identifying types and quantities of workers needed, making hiring decisions, training, assigning work, scheduling work and tracking attendance, reviewing work and evaluating performance, correcting conduct or performance problems, awarding superior work, and recommending rehire or termination. Commercial Driver's License: You must possess and maintain a current Class B. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: Strenuous daily activity involves walking four to twelve miles at a rate of three miles per hour to and from work sites, while carrying and backpacking chainsaws, tools, food, water, materials and supplies. Work involves nearly entire day walking and climbing slopes, working in bent, prone, stooped, or kneeling positions. Lifting and carrying 40 to 80 pounds (for example backpacks, treated planks, logs, and posts) for extended periods of time over extended distances. Heavy pushing and pulling such as wheelbarrows loaded with gravel for long distances and moving down trees. Working Conditions: Nearly all work is performed outside in all kinds of weather. Weather conditions range from snow and sleet to rain and hot humid summer days over the course of a typical season. Incumbent may be exposed to working on slippery or unstable surfaces, heavy lifting, felling trees (including those leaning dangerously or hung up in other trees), bruises, splinters, insect bites, poison ivy. May also be exposed to working for lengthy periods in mud and water. Strenuous work during hot and cold weather with danger of hypothermia and high noise and vibration from chainsaws and rockdrills are expected. Employee may occasionally work around offensive odors and human waste. Travel to and from backcountry work sites is done primarily on foot and by watercraft. Travel on Lake Superior is inherently hazardous due to fog, wind, waves etc.
