GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs tree trimming and preservation work; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision performs tree trimming, pruning, spraying, transplanting and removal. An employee in this class may be required to work during emergencies or other than regularly scheduled hours or days of work. Supervision may be exercised over other members of a tree trimming crew.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Illustrative only)

Climbs trees and works from a bucket of an aerial tower truck;

Trims, prunes, thins and tops trees and shrubs with the use of power and hand saws, ropes, pruning

poles, files and other tools and equipment;

Removes dangerous limbs;

Fells large trees;

Braces and cables large leaders and limbs;

Makes bark tracings;

Sprays trees;

Cleans and fills tree cavities;

Applies dressings to bark wounds and scarred areas;

Plants, cultivates, transplants and shears shrubs and trees;

Cuts out roots of trees;

Fills, rolls, weeds, mows and fertilizes plots;

Drives and operates dump trucks, aerial tower trucks and other automotive equipment;

Participates in snow/leaf removal operations;

Performs routine manual work such as snow shoveling, street sanding and loading and unloading

trucks.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Working knowledge of the principles, practices, tools, materials, methods and safety precautions used in tree trimming, pruning, shearing, felling, spraying, surgery, planting, cultivating and transplanting; ability to climb trees and to work at considerable heights under dangerous conditions; skill in the use of the equipment of the trade including power and hand saws and power sprayers; skill in tree trimming, pruning, shearing, felling, spraying, surgery, planting, cultivating and transplanting; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to operate trucks and other automotive equipment; mechanical aptitude; agility; mental alertness; manual dexterity; dependability; ability to perform in a reasonable matter the essential function of the position.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Either:

(A) Four (4) years of maintenance or laborer experience, one year of which involved tree work including climbing and working in trees; OR

(B) Possession of a high school or equivalency diploma and two (2) years of maintenance or labor experience, one year of which involved tree work including climbing and working in trees; OR

(C) Satisfactory completion of 30 credits at a college or university in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture, Botany or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the general work experience as described above in (B). There is no substitution for the one year of work experience involving tree work including climbing and working in trees.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (Class B) valid in New York State prior to the end of the probationary period to attain permanent status.
