Position Summary

The University of Virginia Medical Center is seeking a dedicated and experienced Advanced Practice Provider (APP)-either an Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Assistant (PA)-to join our Inpatient Procedural Sedation Service. This unique hybrid service provides moderate sedation to adult inpatients throughout the medical center, supporting a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

The APP plays a central role in evaluating patients, developing individualized sedation plans, and delivering procedural sedation in a safe and effective manner. This is a day position that offers a dynamic mix of fixed-location sedation care and a roving/mobile service to meet patients where they are within the hospital.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive pre-sedation assessments, including medical history review, physical examination, ASA classification, and airway risk evaluation.

• Determine patient appropriateness for procedural sedation and develop individualized sedation plans based on clinical indications and procedural requirements.

• Obtain informed consent and educate patients and families regarding procedural sedation and recovery expectations.

• Administer and monitor moderate sedation in accordance with UVA protocols, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards.

• Continuously assess airway patency, hemodynamic stability, and level of sedation throughout procedures.

• Recognize and manage sedation-related complications, including respiratory depression, airway obstruction, and hemodynamic instability.

• Provide post-procedure monitoring, recovery management, and discharge readiness evaluation.

• Document clinical findings, sedation plans, medications administered, procedural events, and patient responses in the electronic medical record.

• Collaborate closely with anesthesiology, radiologists, proceduralists, nursing staff, and consulting services to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

• Serve as a procedural sedation resource and liaison to multidisciplinary teams across the health system.

• Participate in quality improvement, peer review, protocol development, and service enhancement initiatives related to procedural sedation.

Hybrid Service Model

This position supports a unique hybrid procedural sedation service that includes:

• Fixed Sedation Suite: A centralized location within the medical center where patients are brought for procedural sedation.

• Mobile Sedation Team: Provides bedside procedural sedation throughout inpatient units for patients who are unable to travel or whose procedures are performed within their care unit.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced airway management experience.

• Experience in procedural sedation, anesthesiology, critical care, emergency medicine, or another acute care specialty.

• New graduate Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are encouraged to apply. Structured onboarding, mentorship, and clinical support will be provided to facilitate a successful transition into procedural sedation practice.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.

Experience: Department and unit specific.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $124,845.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
