Deputy Sheriff - Lateral

Role The position is responsible for general duty and investigatory law enforcement work in Pierce County, covering 1,806 square miles. Deputies maintain professional standards and uphold Core Values. Benefits New lateral hires receive a hiring incentive of $25,000, 80 hours of sick leave available immediately, and 80 hours vacation available after six months of employment. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate. At least age twenty‑one (21) at time of appointment. Valid Washington State driver’s license at time of appointment and proof of insurability. Must be a United States citizen, lawful permanent resident or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) recipient, and ability to speak, read and write English as required by RCW 41.14.100. In-State Lateral Applicants In addition to the minimum requirements, lateral applicants must have successfully completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy (or its equivalency), possess a valid peace officers’ certificate in Washington State, and completed a Field Training Officer (FTO) period in patrol. Out-of-State Lateral Applicants In addition to the minimum requirements, lateral applicants must have successfully completed a state-sponsored or certified Criminal Justice Training Academy for police officers, currently hold a "General Law Enforcement Commission" or equivalent commission, and completed an FTO period in patrol. Out-of-state lateral applicants must complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Law Enforcement Equivalency Academy within one year of hire or certification as a condition of continued employment. Responsibilities This position involves law enforcement duties across diverse environments, including mountains, rivers, lakes, coastline, and urban areas.
